It’s a combination of memories of 2007/08, signals from a variety of asset classes, looking at the lateral resistance levels, the high levels of complacency, fib levels, bit of EW, and gut instinct.
We will see within a few days whether the bulls are swamped by sell orders from around this level.

Technical question for Jeff if I may… I am looking at Fly’s buy of CNX. I am no professional like you guys but Ive been studying charts for a while. Ive seen charts where the stock is rising quickly on average volume until a geyser on high volume. Then there is CNX which has seen major volume come in during the last couple of days but the stock hasnt made a STRONG move. Sentiment wise, wont these people be the weak hands to be shaken out if it goes lower ?

Great call on this rally – you nailed it. The question remains where do we go from here? Here’s my take. I’m confident oil surplus will continue to grow over the next year due to increase in supply more so than lack of demand. OPEC is impotent, competition will be fierce. That is the continuing deflationary pressure. And we want to raise rates? I just stroked out and mouth vomited at that thought. S&P is -2% ytd, I don’t see the catalyst to continue the upward trajectory of the past few years other than hope.
On a larger time, we have simply been in bearish consolidation for several weeks after going through subtle and overt warnings and slicing lower. Panic and all of that are well below the August lows.
Just playing devil’s advocate. …yes, I am aware that the above is the rationale that someone in denial might put forward.
