Market Update
U.S. equities started off to the downside, but not by much. Markets quickly pared losses as the DOW looked past a revenues miss on $KO and the NASDAQ looked past weakness in $AAPL created by Citi and Tim Cook not giving what some investors wanted in way of a dividend paying preferred stock.
No economic data was available to sway the markets, but comments from the G-7 about being conscious as to not creating a currency war has probably got markets in a good mood. We did have some decent earnings out of $KORS and $MAS.
Oil is up over $97 per barrel while gold is down on the day.
The excitement is happening at the $GS technology conference.
Europe managed to close in the green adding to early gains that pared opening losses.
Lastly, some comments out of Fed representatives may also have the markets in a pleasant mood.

“One of the general rules of the stock market is that things will get as good (or bad) as they can get, then prices will start moving in the other direction. This is another way of describing “regression to the mean”.
This is the reason that we technicians have our indicators — so that we can get an idea when conditions have reached extremes that could cause prices to start moving in the opposite direction. One of the indicators I like is the Percent of PMOs (Price Momentum Oscillators) Above Zero because it is smoother and has less noise than other intermediate-term indicators.
The second panel on the chart below shows the PMO for the S&P 500 Index, which is the price index just above it. The bottom panel shows the percentage of individual S&P 500 stocks that have PMOs above the zero line.
As you can see, the indicator has recently topped at a very overbought level……”

The Nikkei Gives Back on Poor Earnings
Japanese shares fell, with the Nikkei 225 Stock Average retreating from its highest close since 2008, amid earnings concern as Nikon Corp. plunged after trimming its outlook on slowing demand from Europe.
Camera-maker Nikon lost 19 percent to lead declines on the Nikkei 225. Yamaha Corp. slumped 16 percent after the piano maker cut its net-income forecast to zero. Nippon Paper Group Inc. surged 13 percent after reversing a loss. Mazda Motor Corp. added 12 percent after the carmaker raised its operating-profit forecast by 80 percent, citing a weaker yen.
The Nikkei 225 dropped 0.9 percent to close at 11,357.07 in Tokyo after yesterday finishing at its highest since Sept. 29, 2008. The broader Topix Index was little changed at 969.18, with volume on the gauge 43 percent above the 30-day average.
“We are in a bull market, but investors are still concerned about earnings,” saidKoji Toda, chief fund manager at Resona Bank Ltd. in Tokyo, which oversees about 15 trillion yen ($160 billion). “Some investors are selling shares today because yesterday’s rally was excessive.”
The Topix has surged about 34 percent since elections were announced on Nov. 14 on optimism the new government will take aggressive steps to fight deflation. The gauge is trading at 1.1 times book value, compared with 2.1 for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index and 1.4 for the Stoxx Europe 600 Index.

China Stocks Post Day Eight of Upside, Longest Run in a Year
“China’s stocks rose for an eighth day, driving the benchmark index to its longest stretch of gains in almost a year. Technology and financial companies climbed, overshadowing losses by energy producers.
Software maker Neusoft Corp. jumped to a nine-month high on a subsidiary’s plan to buy a stake in a joint venture from Royal Philips Electronics NV. Haitong Securities Co. led a rally for brokerages, climbing 3.5 percent on speculation increased demand for A shares will boost profits. “Economic fundamentals are sound,” said Wu Kan, a Shanghai-based fund manager at Dazhong Insurance Co., which oversees $285 million. “Investors who have missed out on the rally are taking advantage of any dips to jump on to the bull- market run.”
The Shanghai gauge is valued at 13.4 times reported profit, the highest level since September 2011, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Chinese companies traded on the mainland were priced yesterday at the biggest premium to Hong Kong-listed counterparts since Oct. 9, according to an index from Hang Seng Bank Ltd….”
