The DOJ Investigates Pricing Structure for Visa and MasterCard; $V, $MA
“Visa, Inc. (NYSE: V) and Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE: MA) should both be trading higher this morning if you were only looking at the earnings reports from Wednesday. Both credit card processing outfits beat earnings and are in solid shape. But…
The trick is that Visa divulged in a filing that the Department of Justice has a civil investigative demand as an official request for information over its pricing structure and over recent pricing adjustments. It needs to be known that Visa has received inquiries of this nature before and the CEO noted that it could take up to a year to resolve…”

Small Businesses Have a Lock Down on Hiring
“Today, The Small Business Authority released the findings of their SB Authority Market Sentiment Survey. The survey is a monthly window into the concerns of independent business owners. This month, over 2,600 respondents were polled on the topic of hiring and employment. A key finding was that 67% of business owners do not plan on hiring in the next 6 to 12 months. Additionally, 58% of business owners do not hire recent graduates. When looking at the current 8.2% unemployment rate, 26% of business owners believe that the rate will be higher on Election Day in November, while 40% think it will be lower and 34% believe it will remain unchanged…”
Comments »Retailers Saw Less Foot Traffic Last Month: $M, $TGT, $COST, $JWN, $LTD, $ZUMZ
“After a warm winter sent Americans into stores, retailers saw sales drop last month, as high gas prices and new worries about the economy weighed on consumers.
Retailers had expected fewer shoppers in April. Analysts were expecting only a 1.5% gain at stores open at least 12 months. That’s considerably below the surge seen a month earlier, when retailers experienced an average 4.5% increase in sales.
Gas prices remained elevated last month, eating away disposable income. And worries surfaced over the recovery after lackluster job growth in March and consistently higher jobless claims that suggest April also experienced weak job gains. These fears weighed heavily on consumers, prompting restrained spending.”
