    It’s just limestone geological formations found out here (vs. the more typical granitic bedrock found in the east). Kentucky and Indiana are known for their limestone underfoot. That’s why we have such great bourbon and such blue blue grass… limestone filtered watersheds.

    Every really nice college in the U.S. has got an Indiana limestone building or two. In the case of IU and Notre Dame, they are mostly limestone block.

    Limestone is known for weakening under the stress of even mildly acidic water (note the great stalacties and stalagmites of the Mammoth Cave National Park in Central KY — this is essentially “liquid stone.”) If caves form as a result of underground streams, the above-ground layer can be pierced from above, resulting in a sinkhole.
