‘Humans Will Need Two Planets by 2030’

What do you think ?

“LONDON: Human being are overusing the planet’s resources and will need two Earths by 2030,a new report warns.

According to the Living Planet Report, human demands on natural resources have doubled in under 50 years and are now outstripping what the Earth can provide by more than half; and humanity carries on as it is in use of resources, globally it will need the capacity of two Earths by 2030. The report said that wildlife in tropical countries is also under huge pressure, with populations of species falling by 60% in three decades, the Daily Mail reported on Friday.

And the report, from the WWF, the Zoological Society of London and the Global Footprint Network, said that British people are still consuming far more than the Earth can cope with.

If everyone lived such a lifestyle , humans would need 2.75 planets to survive, it warned.

The study’s authors looked at 8,000 populations of 2,500 species and studied the change in land use and water consumption across the globe.

Britain comes 31st in a list of countries based on their “ecological footprint” — the amount of land and sea each person needs to provide the food, clothes and other products they consume and to absorb the carbon dioxide they emit. The country has fallen down the league table from having the 15th biggest footprint in the last report two years ago, but WWF attributes this to an increase in other countries’ impact rather than a reduction in the UK’s use of resources.

Ireland had the 10th highest ecological footprint, while UAE, Qatar, Denmark, Belgium and the US were the five worst countries for over-consumption of resources . “

These claims have been made for so long. MIT made one just last week. Do I trust studies that have been incredibly inaccurate in every past attempt at similar claims? No.

The critical flaw is not that they are wrong in regards to consumption and destruction of resources/ecosystems. It’s that they are incredibly inaccurate in regards to measuring human innovation and most likely will remain so forever. Then something like fracking comes along and SURPRISE! we have another 100 years of known energy resources.

I see your point left’ , but are these statements of or not of mathematical calculations ?
With things like natty gas, innovation, and behavioral changes we could conceivably stop this to a slow crawl.

We won’t need another planet because even if we do not innovate, people will kill each other off until there is enough to go around.

Well according to that theory we are not doing such a great job given the parabolic rise in population.

There’s a reason there’s a parabolic rise in population… Because the availability of resources (mostly oil drilling) has been made available to accommodate such growth which has allowed us to really advance technology quickly. If we didn’t find more ways to get more oil out of the ground, there wouldn’t be as many tractors and farming equipment and food to keep a growing population alive.

Perhaps 1% population growth is unsustainable… There have been periods of dark ages throughout history and it’s nothing new. Some entire nations even fall, plagues hit, people desperate for food start killing others for it. Barbarians raid cities, etc.

Or, the growing population means MORE people that are capable of doing more. It only takes one MAJOR idea and the ability for a very small handful to lead and organize for some major life changing innovation breakthroughs.
If you think technology has been accelerating with 6billion people, just wait until there is 12 billion.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

“Humans use 40% of the net productivity (energy from sunlight) captured by the Earth.” Jared Diamond in The Third Chimpanzee. Unfortunately no references are cited, and he doesn’t come back to elaborate on the issue. If true, and that’s a big if, I predict large scale extinctions and nasty food fights in our future, or significant drops in our living standards. Maybe we better think twice before cutting the military budget.

    Haha Bozo,
In a mad max world the military will protect and fend for themselves.
You ‘ll have to rely on your local militia to survive.
