Dr. Phil Jones, World Renowned Climate Scientist, Can’t Plot a Trend in Excel

From the latest ClimateGate 2.0 email dump, we are presented this little gem. University of East Anglia’s Dr. Phil Jones, keeper of the time series of the instrumental temperature record and whose work has been featured in both the 2001 and 2007 IPCC reports, cannot use Excel to plot a trend.

Perhaps even more shocking is that he is not able to simply Google up the answer. My first search instantly yielded this: Constructing a least squares graph using Microsoft Excel.

Remember, this is one of the leaders of the people who want to tax our citizens in order to generate $37 trillion in green energy technologies by 2030. Yes, $37 trillion is correct.

Juicey may be right. It is likely and easily intuited (although our intuition is often wrong) that man affects his climate. The problem is that we cannot yet determine or predict the actual effect. Is our effect much less or much more than we currently believe? Who knows. Current predictions (models) are proving to be widely inaccurate, measured against real-time observations.

What we do know is that carbon emissions have soared over the last decade, yet there has been no statistically significant warming during that time. One would think that if the carbon feedback was as strong as believed, we’d have seen the warming in the temperature record.

And now, we also know that one of the supposed Climate Science Gods can’t even use Excel to plot a trend.

The biggest issue is that Climate Science has become a “cause” and an industry, and has brought fame and the $$$ to the researchers. See James Hansen’s millions reaped outside of his NASA employment for confirmation. My belief is that the fame and the $$$ has significantly handicapped the ability for real, objective climate science to be performed.

Real, objective climate science is performed. It’s just that the media likes “Experts” of the confident, telegenic, story-tellin’ kind (if it be the World-IS-Gonna-End or All-Is-Fraud kind of story). No one likes to listen to the “maybe”, “according to our limited data”, “the magnitude of the change can only be an educated guess right now” kind of Expert.

Climate change or not, I don’T like that we are messing with somthing that we:
          – do not understand
          – we need for living

Attacking the man, rather than the research or the methodology is not how we further our understanding of this subject. I’m sure if this is true his results are littered with mistakes which should make for interesting discussion.

Having said that he should resign because that level of incompetence is unacceptable from an intern much less a lead researcher

True. It is not fair to attack the man. I would not be able to do so normally, except that he and his colleagues have elevated themselves to celebrities. As he is now enjoying his cult of personality, we should feel free to examine aspects of Dr. Jones that exist outside his ability to conduct climate science. Since not being able to plot a trend in excel deals with both his personality and his ability to conduct climate science, I say it is fair game.

Attacking the man isn’t the same as discrediting the research though.

Complete agreement that the man is a hack of the highest degree.
