Last night’s General Assembly meeting in Zuccotti Park was “one of most contentious ever,” in large part due to a heated debate over whether the drummers at Occupy Wall Street should be given $8,000 from the movement’s coffers to buy more drums and equipment. It seems some of the drums were stolen or vandalized, and the drummers asked the General Assembly to help them regroup. “We have worked for you! Appreciate us,” one drummer told the crowd, but the appeal was denied, and the Huff Post’s Craig Kanalley tweeted, “Drummer who didn’t get money from GA tonight now yelling, cursing at members of GA.” Meanwhile, another member of the drum corps was lashing out at the Community Board meeting.

Never forget, people, that those who rebel against … not wall street, that rebellion is probably actually reaosnable… but against entrepreneurs and business creators…. they aren’t operating on reason, and they won’t prove able to hold together.
You know the “austrian school”, aside from the sin of condoning deflation, … they also condemn corporate business. And that may well be a good thing, but what nobody realizes, because probably very few of you who are reading this ever walked the traditional “american dream” path of inventing something, making it, and then selling it. I have.
What the lack of walking that path costs you, is the ability to realize that the hating of corporations, in the real world, doesn’t manifest itself as “damn the big corps with their wall street lobbies, god bless the entrepreneurs who create jobs and export 10’s of millions of dollars of product”, it manifests itself as “damn everybody who has something”
The net result is that anybody who makes it in this world faces the irrational wrath of the masses.
And thats the real problem in this country folks, the real reason that OWS could be right, the real tradgedy of the financialization of america:
once, if you were truly rich, it was because you’d done something, invented something, industrialized something, revolutionized something, MADE LIVES BETTER.
today its because you “started a hedge fund”. or “i’m a trader”. These are things that bring absolutely ZERO good to the society around you, as Gordon Gecko once said, they are zero sum games. Apple? Everybody wins. John Paulson or Ray Dalio? Only they win. Enormous difference.
And therein lies the problem: the OWS movement would condemn and hate and probably stone and rob an entrepreneur who showed up to hang out, if he/she revealed themselves. Its not rational targeted, purposeful demonstration, ala racial or gender related protests in the 60s. Its blind whining.
Target financialization, and the country would win. Target “success” and we lose.
