I think we DO understand the exponential function, and that is why we love credit/debt/leverage. We just prefer not to think about what happens at the end.

I think we are in uncharted waters and as the article states there are many moving parts that need to be coordinated by many countries. That is where not understanding comes in. If there were one currency and one central power over said currency and economic system then perhaps we could control our manipulations better.
