Ironically republicans typically increase the size of government because they cut taxes which brings more jobs and they actually get more revenue with less taxes. It sounds counter intuitive but the democrats won’t let them make any drastic changes that would cut taxes to such a degree that it not only increases new growth but also slows government growth if such a level exists.
Republicans spend more in nominal terms or even in percentage increase terms, but they spend less as a percentage of GDP.
