I can’t believe it’s August already. This summer is flying by and I haven’t even taken a vacation yet. Due to my early problems with the market, I punished myself and canceled plans to visit Europe. But now the kids are complaining and they want to go somewhere. I was thinking about Orlando; but I’ve been to Disney and Universal so many times. I might just head out to my favorite city in America, La Jolla, Ca, and take them to Lego Land. If any of you wanna be travel agents have some vacation ideas, let me know.
The market is up–so far. Most of my stocks are up, which is just about everything. I own over 50 stocks now, which is probably the most I’ve owned in years. I don’t like the idea of sanctions on Russia, only because I remember how bad it was for the market the last time the Russian economy failed. It’s like we’re inviting a market calamity. Hopefully it gets worked out before disaster.
Look, the Shanghai has been running hot almost every single night. The only place to be now, for swing trades, is in Chinese burritos names. That’s it. 3-D and solar are dead. Social media stocks are being shorted by Janet Yellen, not to mention biotech stocks. The only high beta sector left to trade are the burritos. My favorites, as of now, are ZPIN and VNET–but that changes almost on a daily basis. Today’s burrito is tomorrows garbage, etc, etc.

Anyone know what 2nd quarter earnings are for LEJU?
Meant, what’s the date for their earnings release?
Dr. Fly
How about exploring some of the pristine beaches in FL ? Ichetucknee is also a good option if you head to Florida
August is rain season down there, isn’t it? Plus, Florida is too god damned hot this time of year.
I missed the rainy season part. SFO area is a good bet, as it is moderate during this time?
It’s like being on the Sun here in Florida right now, while under water. 95 degrees and 200% humidity.
-stay out of the water with open cuts in FLORIDA as the flesh eating disease is in coastal waters – Vibrio vulnificus
-Bacteria can enter body through swallowed water or open wounds

The market will fall today.
I say this because the market will do the opposite of what I command.
(I secretly want it to rise.)
Disclosure: Full Costanza.
Good Docteur (sic.),
Perhaps you consider vacationing in Savannah Georgia. Beautiful, outstanding food and drink, and very historic. You may contemplate a Southern Gentleman’s perspective of “The War of Northern Aggression.”
There is also a beach.
The downfall, I am not sure if it would be entertaining for the children. Fun for the kids is a must.
I have been wanting to visit Ga
Lake George is always a good time.
Done lake George too many times
My first choice is always the land of milk and honey, Israel.
No thanks
nothing like the Gaza strip during war time
if they’re booked, perhaps a little ebola-tour in west africa would be just what the doctor ordered
hahahahahahahahhahaha
Fly into Denver, go to “Princeton hot springs” for a couple days. Its a great chill place with nice pools and water slides for the kids. Bag some very close by 14ers, go for a float down the Arkansas river, do some fishing. Rent one of the cabins, nicer than the hotel.
Where are all the “rally monkeys” from yesterday?
I live near La Jolla. Skip Leggo Land, its lame and we had fires near there this past spring so its a bit charred. For the kids, check out San Diego zoo and Sea World (extra Blackfish)….both aren’t far from La Jolla. If you like to watch the ponies run, Del Mar racetrack is open and it is a nice track…..not like the Hobo camp race tracks that the east coast has. After the track, stop by Solana beach, lots of nice cafes etc. near the ocean, clean town. If you surf, head up to San Clemente (Trestles). I live here, feel free to hit me up, I have extra boards etc. The water is freakishly warm this summer.
Wherever you go, I’m sure you will have fun. Happy travels.
Been to the zoo and sea world. Are you sure about Lego land? The kids really want to go
I just took my son, its definitely a step down from the Zoo and Sea World. Pretty shoddy operation IMO. Realistically, if the kids are set on it, you will likely be going one way or another. I would simply recommend that you refrain from planning your vacation around Leggo Land. I’m confident that you will get more than your fill in one day and be happy to be done with it.
LeggoLand is also in C-Bad which is one of the grimier beach cities. Not unsafe or anything, but I just wouldn’t recommend picking your hotel in Carlsbad. La Jolla is a nice town for your accommodations and its easy enough to get around to other beach cities.
Also, Kayaking La Jolla caves is a fun half day adventure. Kid friendly as long as an adult is in the kayak as well (I’m assuming your kids are young but over age 3). There are small caves that you can kayak into and back out the other side of. They aren’t dark or creepy inside and occasionally there will be some sea lions swimming around.
how old are your kids. I would agree that LEGOLAND isn’t that great — looks like a rundown Disneyland.
Legoland was one of the least cool things I’ve done in California, but would go back to Carlsbad anytime.
OA,
Are you a former Marine?
Rent a large RV. Pack kids and Mrs Fly in it with a bunch of your best foods, wines, video games, etc. Drive to center of country and visit largest ball of twine, grand canyon, Mt Rushmore, etc. Make sure to have wifi access as to be able to blog about said activities. Enjoy!

Unless your kids are REALLY in to Legos or are under the age of 7, Legoland will bore them.
Good to know
Ya, even LEGGO freaks are disappointed. Its a day trip but nothing more. Definitely not a main attraction.
Buy Mrs. Fly a nice hat and take the family to Saratoga Race Track for the weekend…. kids will love watching the ponies.
The Redneck Riviera, home to the great Kenneth Powers will be visited by me this Labor Day weekend. I’ve never been, kind of intrigued.
This is the right time of year to visit Seattle, Portland, the Oregon Coast or, and this might be more your style, Vancouver B.C. Lots and lots of kids at Whistler just up the coast; rich kid alpine village mountain biking kind of thing. You could put your feet up there. Amazing land and cityscapes, waterfalls and seafood. Take a ferry ride over to Victoria for high tea. West side is the best side.
I agree, The NW is gorgeous in Summer. Central Oregon: Bend, Sunriver is an outdoor paradise.
I love Bend. When I crush this trade game I’m moving to Bend. No direct flights from NYC though. Its a trek. But the Portland to Hood River, to Bend, then Crater Lake, then Oregon Coast back to Portland… Epic. Maybe tough with kids though.
I agree, Victoria is beautiful this time of year. My favorite city.
I agree, Controller. Victoria is beautiful this time of year. And they could go to Nanimo in the north end of the island – more rustic than Victoria, but beautiful nonetheless
First date with Mrs. Anton was in La Jolla, so it’s still a favorite. Maybe rent a house in Coronado and hang out at the beach for a week, take the kids to the San Diego Zoo, squire Mrs. Fly around La Jolla. Plenty of good restaurants around San Diego.
Maybe your pal Howard has recommendations for a place to stay in Coronado. We stayed at the Hotel Del last time and it was okay, but a house it condo would be better for a week.
You could also be in Bermuda in about 3 hours or so from NJ.
Not sure you’ll find a better place to relax than Hilton Head, SC. It’s a make your own fun spot, but the area is very family friendly due to a recent community building push
I think the relief rally is coming on now.
Atlantis in the Bahamas – fun for the kids and adults.
Dr. Fly, not a very original idea, but I enjoyed Yellowstone, every time we went when I was a lad.
I second UncleBuccs…wildlife, rafting the Snake River, dining in Jackson, great hikes, spectacular scenery, etc. Loved it as a kid then and now.
Agreed, Legoland was pretty lame. La Jolla is a great choice, or for something different try Vail / Aspen / Breckenridge. white water rafting, alpine slides for the kids, hiking, horseback etc. Great weather this time of year.
Sir Dr Professor Fly,
Should you need any minions to test the new PPT 2.0 I offer up my services. I work for a market data company. We sell trading software (like Think or Swim etc) and have lots of practice in breaking software :).
I recommend Aruba. Stay at the new Ritz Carlton. Ritz makes it fun for the kids. Aruba is fairly civilized for a Caribbean Island, with a good food scene.
OR, Atlantis in the Bahamas. Every kid loves an exotic water park.
Atlantis in April ’15 for me and mine…cant wait
Depending on age of kids – Phoenix for some sun, great Mexican food and water park http://www.squawpeakhilton.com/phoenix-hotel-water-park
then side trip to Sedona for red rock pink jeep tour followed by Grand Canyon. Trip of a lifetime.
P.S. for a more relaxing time, you can’t go wrong with the Atlantis on Paradise Island, Bahamas. great restaurants and casino too.
Dude, you are an hour or two away from some of best beaches of east coast.
Sandy Hook, Belmar, Island Beach State Park / Seaside, Cape May etc. There are things to do, sights to see, trails to hike… Not too hot, not too expensive. Good service, internet, no disease and well-behaved locals. Take a day trip, or stay overnight.
Plus, if SHTF you can be back at your six-monitor screens before market closes…he-he
You know there is a LEGOLAND about an hour south of Disney.
It’s on the old Cypress Gardens property.
http://florida.legoland.com/
Cypress Gardens is gone? Next you’ll be telling me there’s no more Boardwalk and Baseball!
No Circus World either.
Boardwalk and Baseball was great and used to go to a few Royals spring training games there.
Just got back from Naples with the family. Ocean is warm and kids loved that in the day and evening. Also discovered a great water park very close by…5 water slides that are all awesome. Excellent dining. Airboat tours through are campy, but fun for kids. Nothing wrong with this FL spot in the summer. Would do it again in a heart beat.
if going to San Diego – Loews Coronado Bay. we loved it. http://www.loewshotels.com/Coronado-Bay-Resort
You should check out the wild animal park if you choose SD. Went there with the family and it was very nice.
For hotel accommodations, check out the grand in Del Mar. Very nice hotel and grounds. It is also pretty close to La Jolla.
Think about Galapagos. I suggest going through the Red Mangrove group. Google redmangrovegalapagos.com .
Any of the Club Med Mexico locations are paradise. All inclusive makes it awesome for parents. Food is great and can’t beat the locations. Very clean, and relaxing.
You could also take the family on a cruise somewhere in the Caribbean. Disney has some great kid friendly cruises with activities and a separate activity director for the children. And there are activities for the adults too.
I hear the lake at Toledo is good. If you like green.
LOL
Dr. Fly, just throwing one more out there. How about Denali? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkMI7VW3vLk
I can help with Alaska logistics.
Take them to Banff in Alberta. When you get bored, Calgary is an hour and a half away.
You know, DC isn’t bad for a trip with the kids. Lots of good restaurants and shopping. Fucktard politicos are away, so it’s less crowded now.
Kind of hot right now, but not terrible. It’s an easy trip if you fly into Reagan. Been down there a lot lately and have good hotel and restaurant recos if this is your cup if bergamot.
+1
I live here and think you’re full of shit. Good shopping? Go to the Short Hills Mall in NJ. Skip DC. Restaurants? Same story.
Being of a lower social class, there is much in every city that is above your means and beyond your grasp.
Fortunately, Le Fly is not seeking an AirBnB rental in your housing project.
Whistler Blackcomb. Although known for great skiing, it is a beautiful place to visit in the summer months. There’s plenty to do for the kids if they are active
Last idea: If you’re thinking about La Jolla, and a flight of that length from NJ, then why not take the family to Paris? A little longer and pricier flight, but Paris really doesn’t have to cost much more than a vacation in Cali these days. And Mrs. Fly and the kids will remember it forever.
We like the Crillon, but that’s overkill with a big family. I saw a fairly cheap hotel on TripAdvisor in the same arrondissement. You won’t need a car or a cab to get to the major sights and your hotel will, more often than not, be able to set you up with tix to the Louvre, d’Orsay, and Rodin museums so you won’t waste time in lines.
I got the idea you were looking for a fairly easy trip, but Paris isn’t really any more difficult than getting to La Jolla (traffic might even be better) and your experience will likely be more memorable.
Next year, I’d suggest Angkor Wat with a stopover in Hong Kong and one day in Tokyo on the way home. That’s a vacation that you’ll remember forever. And you should see Siem Reap before the developers turn it into Reno. It’s incredible.
We went to Paris when our 3 kids were 12,10,7, and had a great time. We went to Disneyland there as a compromise as I refused to take them to an american Disneyland (Way too fucking corporate!), plus the Eiffel Tower, Seine boats, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, Versailles. They loved it all but the highlight was the food. My wife is an amazing cook so the kids learned early to appreciate different tastes, and every evening we would have a different culinary adventure. They especially loved being asked if they would like a glass of wine! The 7 year old even tried snails, and pronounced them excellent!
Great ages for travel & discovery. Life changing.
Stockholm my man. First class and off the beaten path.
