I have a very strong opinions of 99% of the people I’ve come across in tech and I can confidently say, without equivocation, that I hate them all. Some come across with chips on their shoulders — smaller men with big egos — mad at the world for not being able to see things in binary code. Others come across mealy mouthed and really down to earth and ‘cool’ only to quickly and flippantly desert you in the middle of nowhere without water or sustenance. Then there’s the milquetoast guy, neither hot or cold. Seems nice, but something is always off. Next thing you know, POOF! — he’s fucking vanished after hearing he can’t make a fortune.

Very true, believe it or not the internet killed high tech. In the 80’s 90’s, tech sold soft/hardware products that helped man increase productivity in other industries. Those drugs keeping you alive, that on time delivery of food, that wicked space-sex fiction novel wrote and published, all done on a PC, all from high tech innovation. Today in tech they sell and control content, data, access. They want you to use their product to help their cause.
In the 90s you could be anything in the tech workplace (literally come to work dressed as a hamster) and there was NO politics. Tech was a political free space, because everyone accepted the dude in the cube next door could be a homo-commie or NRA-vegan and it did not matter if he got his work done. Freedom of thought + bust tail work ethics.
Not anymore today tech is more and more about using our products if it helps our cause. Being anything you want to be as long as it falls on the correct side of the binary.
Power corrupts.
Some of us remember the 80s. There was no room for socialists at that time: if they weren’t crazy, they were evil. Not surprising that things truned 180° given the econmic inequality. Even today, there’s stil a conservative think tank that insists: “Wealth Has Never Been More Equal” based on the fact that the middle class has smart phones and the previous generations didn’t.
