Trump Takes Swipe at Sessions Again, Makes Washington Post Enemy #1 in the Media

The President was tweeting late last night and early this morning. One of the more notable outbursts was against his AG, Jeff Sessions. He’s probably doing this to force Sessions to resign, a plan that should work out in the end. Some supporters of Trump might view this as a positive, since Sessions has proven the only thing he’s interested in doing is going after marijuana dealers since taking office at the DOJ. Still, it’s never a positive to see the head of the DOJ maligned by the President.

The President also went after the acting head of the FBI. I know that might sound bad, but these department heads are flawed people and many deserve to be aired out.

Also notable is the President’s number one enemy seems to be WaPo now, with CNN dropping to a close second. In a series of tweets, Trump takes on the Washington Compost, owned by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.

The market is ignoring the Amazon tax references, because Trump is like the boy who cried wolf at this stage. No one believes him.

In an Oped published last night, the Washington Post Editorial board declared the President persona non grata, as it pertains to protecting the American people from the very menacing threat in Moscow.

Congress’s action is nevertheless essential. It has become all too evident that Mr. Trump cannot be trusted to protect vital U.S. interests against persistent Russian aggression. He has shown no interest in stopping Russian cyberattacks, including further assaults on the U.S. electoral system. He appears ready to hand Mr. Putin major concessions for nothing, from the return of the compounds to withdrawal of U.S. support for rebel forces in Syria. Why Mr. Trump pursues these actions remains a mystery. But Congress is right to limit the damage.

How this plays out has so many possible permutations – but Trump is definitely signalling that changes are on the way.

Giuliani was Associate AG under Reagan but he may be too old to take on the fight – but he is a very tough, seasoned and aggressive prosecutor.

Keep a careful watch of the current Associate AG, Rachael Brand. She is a strict constitutionalist and libertarian. Currently chair of the very prestigious Federalist Society which has the following statement of purpose:

“To promote the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be”

In a perfect world, what I would do is to keep Sessions on, get rid of Rosenstein and put Giuliani in his place, only temporarily – just to get the Clinton prosecutions under way and to bring Mueller to heel – possibly dismissing him and the rest team later in the year. Then as time passes and Giuliani/Sessions retire after a year or so, bring in Brand to take over – she’s only 44 years old and has the right philosophy for the job.

Looking at this dispassionately – I believe that Trump is making a mistake attacking Sessions – he should be aiming both barrels at Rosenstein for not recusing himself for overseeing Mueller – where many clear conflicts of interest exist.

How dare he stop arming Syrian rebels, that plan was working out so well there, Syria is great again. What happens when ISIS or non moderates beat the guys we back and then they take the American weapons and equipment? Stupid policy. TBT arming the Afghan ‘moderates’ in the 80’s, how’d that turn out again?

Sessions is off base for going after low level drug offenders and talking about seizing property… see ya pal.

Cricket…attacking Sessions is a mistake? you think? attacking McCabe is a mistake? you think? Jeff “Goober” Sessions is very popular among the conservatards that still support our unhinged president and self-destructive president. He will fire Sessions. He will attempt to boot Mueller and chaos will ensue, Trump’s most concerned that his shady biz deals with foreigners will be exposed. He doesn’t give a shit about our country. Never did and never will.

As job is too big for one person – bring in Giuliani for the prosecutorial work as Deputy AG, let Sessions concentrate on the other stuff that he is good at, like immigration, borders, etc and build a path for Brand over the next 2 or 3 years.

Giuliani may be a little disconnected from recent events to get things rolling again. Trump needs to avoid picking folks simply on name recognition.
The new FBI man Christopher Wray was a good pick. if he picks a new AG get one who knows the department well and can quickly clear it of Obama holdovers.

Sacking Sessions would put Rosenstein in charge until the Senate approves a new AG – which could take months. That is the problem now. Better to bring in new people under Sessions.

How dare she say that to the Commander in Chief.

I heard a rumor that everyone on his block list is also on a covert kill list. That would make sense.

This is a low moment for President Trump.
Public humiliation is a classless way to attack an employee.
You do it in private and let the employee know what must change.

Under most circumstances, I would agree as well, but these are not normal circumstances. I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump had already spoken to Sessions privately to no avail and he may see this as a necessary action. Certainly, Trump is attempting to create headlines while making sure Hillary’s ‘crimes’ are noted within these headlines. They won’t write about Trump’s comments about Hillary if that’s all he tweets about but they will write about him lambasting Sessions and will thus include his comments about Hillary. Put yourself in his place. I can’t blame him for his frustration. Rome burns while the politicians and the press act like Nero.

J_E In any other world I will agree but in DC it seems like folks have a pretty thick skin. I mean look at what Trump and Cruz said about each other during the campaign – yet they seem to have each other’s back now. Rand Paul same thing.

But it looks like Trump has decided that Sessions on the way out – unless he backs Trump to sack Rosenstein – that could get Sessions back on Trump’s good side.
