Congratulations to Lifetime $QQQ Bagholders from the Dot Com Era; You’re Now Back to Breakeven

Who said the buy and hold strategy was dead?

Talk about overhead supply. There is a lifetime worth of $QQQ-fags stuck in this shit for the past 15 years, ancient relics who decided to simply buy and hold and ignore reality.

That’s one heck of a round trip.

Yes, if you were dumb enough to put 100% of your investment capital in the market in one week.

Most buy and hold investors buy regularly. If you had been buying regularly, say every month… even if you started in 99… you’d be doing great now. My dad is in the pool now because of index buy and hold. His buddies are in Queens because of tech stocks that went up and bust. It is that much harder to buy more TSLA when the stock is down 40%. But buying QQQ or SPY is easy as pie.

It is like if someone were to decide they wanted to buy and hold the Dow… and put their entire life savings into the Dow at these levels. I’m sure there are a lot of rust belt gold bugs who just did, (without taking a look at the Obama chart we all rode but deny has anything to do with him) now that Trump is here to make America great again.

Free money is propping up valuation, if you want to assign blame for that house of cards, I suppose Obama would be a good target.

I remember when BAC hit 10 bucks. I bought so much ecstasy with that free money… should have reinvested it in TQQQ.

Can’t wait to see that thesis unfold….

“You see… up until Dow 19,000, that is fake growth… not real… “free money”… but past 19,000… now that is MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN growth… very real… real smart investor dollars pouring back in to a REAL SOLID market”

Here we are pretending anyone knows why stocks go up.

My first IT boss found out I was trading. He asked how I knew to buy XIV at certain levels, assuming the VIX will go down after a spike… I tried to explain and then he stared at his drink and told me this story about how the stock market “doesn’t work”

He had designed a computer network for an “internet” company in the 90s. They offered him 2 choices for payment… $250k cash or 1 million in stock options. He was 26 years old.

Really smart guy. Also a high school dropout.

He took the stock options. Stock started rising. When the music stopped the stock went to 0.

I am not lying… today he is long TSLA and only TSLA.

Earlier, in college, I worked at an antique store, moving furniture with illegals (because I want to tell my children I did backbreaking work once)

the boss was a nice guy, made over a million a year easily.

His stock market doesn’t work story was similar… a sharp dressed broker at a party told him to buy a stock, he couldn’t remember the name, but of course it was an “internet company”

Stock doubled! Wife says hey take the money out. Guy says “no… this is clearly where the money goes…”

    He bought more!

Of course the sharp dressed man was nowhere to be found when it was time to sell Vaginatrex or whatever. Again. Down to 0.

Meanwhile my dad kept pulling electrical cable and building the NYC subway from scratch with his bare hands in the freezing cold, showering me with legos and later beer and weed money, and stories about how the CIA schemed and toppled democratically elected governments in Latin America…. and consistently buying index funds. If he knew about the dot com bust, it was because a coworker was long Infinitron on margin with money borrowed from in-laws.

Great stories, Peaches. Thanks. That’s how a lot of people are about the stock market. People think it’s easy. You just put all your money on a hot tip. But if that doesn’t work, they think the market is impossible to invest or trade in. They swing from one extreme to the other.

Actually studying what happens in the market and trying to figure out a winning method, does not seem like an option to many people– even people who work hard at other tasks. Strange, isn’t it?

Just like religion. Or playing guitar without ever taking lessons. People go to temple/church and think for 3 minutes as 15 year olds and decide its all bullshit.

The market keeps going up. Torah keeps changing lives.

Hey Rabbi, where the hell is your compassion? Some of my stupid friends got caught in the Dot Com bubble. I was running a business that flourished during that time and saw their retirement accounts collapse, forcing them to get jobs at their competitors firms!

My compassion is still where it usually is, in my heart, waiting for my ego to back off.

The two gentlemen I mentioned are doing very well. I found their stories funny. Especially because they were so certain I was following down the same route as them. They are not dumb people… my IT director was one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life. Dropped out of HS in Harlem, started working for bell Atlantic as a street technician and now he drives a Tesla and owns an airplane.

These guys were not hurt by the bubble burst.

I think everything that happens to us is something we deserve. Sometimes bad things happen so that we can get knocked down and miss the worst thing!

Maybe your friend would have spent his winnings on a big house, and then attracted a gold digging whore wife who would have stabbed him to death?

Maybe he met his new wife at the other job or whatever!

Maybe he just lost money and his health and family were fine and he learned his lesson and its no big fucking deal.

I am doing pretty well. But when I see people go through misfortune who were doing the best they knew how, I feel sad for them and do not blame them for their misfortune.

Most of the people I see going through misfortune are not liberals.

Why all the compulsive liberal bashing? Just can’t stop doing it. Is that what you call having a heart? Bashing half the country constantly?

No wonder we are so Divided and Conquered. Half of the country can’t stop bashing the other half.

If you are not Right Wing, then why do you bash Left of Center folks all the time?

I am sorry your friends had a hard time. I’m young and have no responsibilities. I’ve never seen a crash but I have always known it might happen tomorrow. Probably hard for baby boomers who were used to nothing but success for America 100% of the time.

I’m sure it must be rough explaining to your family you have a gambling problem, or you dumped your life savings on a single stock on a single day, because the guy with the nice watch said it would be a good idea

Maybe reading some history would have helped. Fly says not to say that but fuck it. I’m not here to teach people history. I’m here to laugh at them.

Did you know the market didnt bottom after 29 until 32? And that only democrat FDR’s “communism” got the wheels spinning again?

          Regulation fixed the stock market…

          let that sink in.

Chuck, I don’t tell you what to talk about and what not to talk about. It’s important to talk openly about political realities if we want to get somewhere good politically in the U.S. We need to not shut each other up with insults, or with rules about what not to talk about.

If I think Wings have relevance to what is happening, I will talk about Wings. What is your beef against Wings? Do you want to hide what Wing you are on? Since you are a consistent basher of liberals, it’s not too hard to guess.

me and frog get called commies all the time. FDR had more progressive policies than I would ever agree with. By that logic, everyone who has ever called us commies would also call FDR a commie.

No one will admit it because its clear proof they’re retarded.

FDR was a commie by ibankcoin standards.

Anyone who believes I or frog are commies must admit FDR is a bigger commie than us.

Either FDR is a communist or we’re right about… practically everything. Big government built the bomb, the internet, the moon rocket, etc. We did it with high taxes on rich people. We did it with regulation of industries. We did it with unions and decent wages. We did it mostly without republicans and once they got back in they fucked it up again. They have fucked it up every single time.

That is history. Find your own fucking link.

          Frog,

“I don’ think that everything that happens to us is something we deserve. But I know it is a common belief among people who are doing pretty well. I am doing pretty well. But when I see people go through misfortune who were doing the best they knew how, I feel sad for them and do not blame them for their misfortune.”

That is very nice of you. I did not mean that people did something to deserve what happens to them. Just that it happens to them, and specifically to them, for a reason.

If someone is doing well, they are likely to think that they did something to be doing so well but this is not true.

The story of Moses shows us that the Pharaoh had everything in the world. God gave the pharaoh everything for a reason… so that he would not be able to imagine anyone else besides him having as much power as he had. Think about this dudes life. He was born a king, raised a king, had everything, literally everything; Egyptian pharaohs were treated like gods. And his entire life… he was only there so that he could sin by being an arrogant prick who refused to bow down to orders from someone else. After plagues and everything. His son dies. Then he dies. Drowns with his army in the sea.

So… God gave this dude tons of things specifically so he would be an asshole. The guy didn’t deserve to be given anything. He got what was “his” God might take away a lot of things so that you end up loving him more, or he might make you break your leg so you don’t go to war, or miss the day at work when the building blows up.

It might be “yours” to make a lot of money, or lose it all. It happens to you for a reason, and what counts is what you do when things happen to you, how you react.

I hope all the God stuff is not annoying. Maybe you are a “fate” guy.

Have you ever read Marcus Aurelius?

Back in nineteen and fifty seven, a friend of mine who was
a stockbroker convinced me to put $50 a month into a mutual-
MIT. I did this for 11 months, then joined the Air Force and
put in not another dime after that – just reinvested dividends.

Today that $550 investment is worth $102,000. I paid some
taxes on the dividends each year but now at age 82 I do not
grouse over paying some tax money to Uncle Sam.

My old man is 90 years old. He is a veteran of WW2 and Korea. He didn’t do a tour in Vietnam Nam cuz mom forced him to retire earlier than he wished. He put my brother and I through college and always had our backs. Mom died fearing computers yet he embraced computers and uses iPads, iPhones, and has all that UVerse shit from AT&T at home. His mind is still sharp, thank God, however he still gives me hell for not answering his emails in time! Go figure!

Peaches, yes, Marcus Aurelius is interesting to read. Also Mark Twain, Lao Tzu, J. Krishnamurti, Soren Kierkegaard.

I am not a literal God person, with the guy up in heaven with his long white beard or anything, although I believe in mysteries of the universe beyond our knowing, where we can get clues of them from time to time. And I certainly believe that we all are part of something much larger than ourselves that we can sometimes tap into.
