To put this into perspective, ESPN has 89m subs, but have shed 13m since 2013 and 4m over the past year. Without question, this is a long term issue for the company and the NFL imploding isn’t helping.
The NFL was to America what Apple pie and baseball used to be. It’s unfathomable to most people that the millionaire players in the NFL would refuse to show respect for this country by standing for the pledge.
Shares of the parent company, DIS, are lower on the news.

Has anybody watched what their calling SportsCenter lately? Where are the “Sports”? It’s just a mindless parade of “human interest stories” and celebrities selling their latest wares.
It’s absolutely brutal to watch. They rarely ever breakdown the actual intricacies of the activity, let alone rarely talk about sports. If they do, it’s all fringe discussion, or personal issues.
The new formatting is horrible and unwatchable. The anchors and host aren’t funny, and some literally sound like they are reading broken English from a Twitter feed. I’m not sure where they were going with it.
Their old format, of highlights and instant quick analysis, was perfect for the mindset most content consumers have these days. SportsCenter was ahead of it’s time, but it’s broken.
People don’t watch Sportscenter anymore and that was before the change. Why would you when you can get highlights and scores on the ESPN app any time you want?
I’d watch SportsCenter from my treadmill, as I used to, if it were remotely watchable. Who uses the ESPN app on a treadmill?
I less and less people are going to sit through SportsCenter to see the highlights of their favorite teams. It’s a waste of time.

It’s a measurement issue. NLSN bases sub trends on a small sample of the population and has already walked back this specific report. That being said, the media companies like DIS could easily release the numbers that get reported to them by the distributors like Comcast but they choose not to and I can only assume there’s a reason for why they don’t want investors to know what those numbers are.
