Pokemon Mania Continues: Nintendo Surges Again in Tokyo

I took my son to catch a jigglypuff today. Also, the Princeton gym is strong as heck, fortressed by a Magmar that was a level 1,188. His fire game was strong.

Shares of Nintendo are ripping higher by 16% in Tokyo this evening, on news that the app has topped 15 million downloads.

Skeptics will say this is all horseshit. But don’t forget that Nintendo is a very real and very big company, led by smart people. They will find a way to monetize the hell out of this. Henceforth, the Pokemon craze continues.

Are you thinking of playing yourself? Or will you play vicariously thru your son? I mean, it’s research right? I’d like to think you had a ShakeShack burger before you bought so this is the game thing. I mean, I need to justify why I should join the iBC League. I mean if there is one.. for research of course.

      The Fly doesn’t play games.

It’s a shame, Mr. Fly. I can picture you running through the streets, throwing pokeballs like a tennis ball launcher, dominating all the gyms in a 10 mile radius.

This game is crazy. 40 year old men at work now play this game. Our social interactions now include where the Pokemon are located around the office. Nuts.

They will find a way to monetize the hell out of this.

Someone on the radio mentioned that they have 2 Pokemon games coming out for their game systems, and thought the app would broaden the market for those games.

I doubt that would be the extent of it. There is so much more possible with a game that brings you into the physical world.

I’d put a QR code reader or similar into the app, so a fast-food partner could put a code in kids meals or, better still, on a peel-off sticker attached to large drink cups. Code would be good only once and would give the user items that usually cost real-world dollars or special items that are branded by the partner (burgers that a monster can eat to get additional capability in battle, for example).

They’re allowing businesses to pay to become hot spots to get foot traffic.

Anyone happen to know who owns the trademark on Pokemon? or better yet, what the license agreement may look like (assuming Nintendo didnt create Pokemon)

    Short this shit.
Nintendo is a played out gaming company with no more cutting edge ideas & only gimmicks.

See how well they’ve done after selling those shifty Wii’s and the craze ended 1 year later?

    Smart how?

I think this game is just the beginning of something enormous and new in interactive technology, but we have not seen its final evolutionary form.

    That was a Pokemon joke.

Has anyone read the book Daemon by Daniel Suarez? I think that is the Fly version of Pokemon Go.

Similar augmented reality concept, except the game takes over the real world and the people in it. Even features weapons technology not too far off from the Orbital Soace Cannon. If you level up far enough in the game, you gain the ability to control real world items like autonomous weaponized motorcycles and a rain of spikes that you can summon down upon your enemies from the sky.

The game would give people real world quests and reward or punish you based on compliance. It would also hack into and take over companies and financial markets, often starting by compromising IT employees on the inside.

Also features a Nazi super villain virtual character that you can see with the app but that also controls real world things and can torture / kill real people by controlling real world things and directing the actions of real people.

It essentially turns the world into a MMOG. I did not see a single thing in the book that was not possible with today’s technology.

So much potential for this “new interaction model”…

Thanks. I got the audiobook on your recommendation. You should check out Rainbow’s End by Vernor Vinge. He was writing about this stuff back in 2007, and envisioned a world in which we would all be living in our bubble realities.

Heard someone caught a scarecrow, got smart enough to catch a lion, which gave him the courage to talk to a girl he liked, so she gave him her tin man……
