Really? I get how depression is something of a big deal in this day and age of overly emotional self entitled narcissists. But I never knew there was a massive market for debilitating depression for women, post child birth.
According to the sages on Wall Street, apparently there is.
In a small trial of 21 patients, the treatment met its main goal of a significant reduction in the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, or HAM-D, a questionnaire used by psychiatrists to measure the level of depression, compared with placebo. After 30 days, seven of the 10 patients taking the drug, Sage-547, and two of the 11 in the placebo group were in remission, Sage said Tuesday in a statement.
Sage-547 was generally well-tolerated, with no serious adverse events reported during the treatment and follow-up periods, the biotech company said. A greater number of adverse events were reported in the placebo group than in the treatment arm of the trial. There are no approved therapies specifically for postpartum depression and therapeutic options in severe cases are limited, Sage said.
Not a fan of behavioral drugs, whatsoever. In many cases, psychotropics cause more damage than good. As a society, our answer to every problem seems to be papering over it, dull out the senses so that life can continue. Sometimes, people need to be smacked around and kicked into a garbage sewer.

They should just send each new mother home with a single 110mg dose of MDMA. Have to dump some breastmilk for five days but we could sell that to China !

Apparently it can last several months to a year. So the women (and some men, apparently) who suffer from this wouldn’t be taking the drug for very long. And those who have a mild case of it will probably not need medication.
This is not what pharmaceutical companies call a “perfect drug.” This term does not mean a drug that works great. It means perfect in marketing terms i.e. a drug that people will be taking every day for the rest of their lives.
“Sometimes, people need to be smacked around and kicked into a garbage sewer.” Surely you can’t be talking about women with postpartum depression after child birth.
No, those women simply need a little wine and roses, tantric massage, and some focused time and attention.
It was a general statement about depression. Yes, women who are depressed after giving birth to an amazing baby are included.
Magic mushrooms are also good for various types of depression– seriously

Psychiatric drugs for depression is a complex question. There are certainly people who take drugs as a first resort, rather than even attempting to solve the problems that make them depressed. And there are also people who ought to be on medications who are not.
Sometimes I wonder if they should put them in the water supply in cities with high suicide attempt rates like Seattle. But then not all people there are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder. But most are. It might be better to try putting full spectrum lights in their homes first– since there it is apparently related to light deprivation in the non-summer months.
A lot of people just drink tons of coffee, which is said to help keep people from committing suicide although not necessarily to keep them from being depressed. If a person drinks a huge amount of it, it does replace the depression with a hyped up anxiety.
A lot of people like to self medicate with non-prescriptions drugs like coffee or alcohol. But sometimes this makes them worse off rather than better. At least with coffee, people can get some things done, rather than being a depressed non-functional zombie, like many people in Seattle seemed to me to be, when I lived there.
I wonder between Ecstasy and Magic Mushrooms, which would be more efficacious for new mother to be on. This is very good, veeeeeeeery responsible advice. Way to go.
How many shroom trips have you been on frog? Your newborn will become a minotaur and start speaking to you in 15 languages.
Mrs. Fly might smack you around if she reads this one.
You might not be a fan of behavioral drugs, but nature is. Sometimes nature gets the dose wrong when adjusting the body back to non-pregnant status, and new mothers kill their infants.
This drug is to keep nature’s errors from causing havoc, until the mother’s body regains its ability to maintain healthy hormone levels.
