The Young Crown Prince from the House of Saud: Women Aren’t Ready to Drive

I’ve never heard anyone stand up for women’s rights in these Middle East countries. I’d rather be a camel than a woman in these places.

The young Prince Mohammed has declared that the community isn’t convinced women should be permitted, by law, to drive in Saudi Arabia.

But don’t worry, positive changes are coming soon.

Allowing women to drive is “not a religious issue as much as it is an issue that relates to the community itself that either accepts it or refuses it,” said the 30-year-old prince, who has amassed unprecedented powers since his father, King Salman, ascended to the throne. “The community is not convinced about women driving” and sees negative consequences if it’s allowed, the prince said on Monday after outlining a plan to reduce the kingdom’s reliance on oil.

The prince had signaled his support for more freedom for women during an interview this month, saying “we believe women have rights in Islam that they’ve yet to obtain.” But when asked about the driving ban by a reporter on Monday, he said reform couldn’t be rushed. “Changes could happen in the future and we always hope they will be positive changes,” he said.

Our good friends the Saudis. A good rule of thumb, at least in my experience, is to judge others by the company he keeps. If we were to hold America to the same scrutiny, what does it say about us?

This is why I argue that we should be supporting the Iranians rather than this stone-aged monarchy. I never get a good answer when I ask people how many Iranians were on those planes on 9/11.

How many Iranians invaded US diplomatic space and held hostages for a year? Broke into other embassies in the last two years? Regard America as the Great Satan as a matter of state policy? They are a lovable bunch; just too bad they were under sanction when Marky Mark was big because he could have used some of that righteous backup that only Persia could provide.

Did the Iranians have any reasons to be pissed at the US? And please try to remember that the embassy occupation was in the middle of a revolution in the midst of outright chaos.

I don’t think that we should be supporting any of these people. The Middle East is very chaotic and full of radical extremists. A lot of things are done in secret. The people who live there can’t even tell who are their friends and who are their enemies. — who is going to sneak up and kill them. How could the U.S. figure that out, when we don’t live there and are unfamiliar with the languages, the religious divisions, and the cultures?

Neither Iran nor Saudi is really our ally overall. We don’t have a lot in common with either place, and both have lots of radical extremists in them who hate “infidels” like us– though not necessarily in the government– sometimes in the clerics and/or the private citizens. Perhaps there are some few issues on which we can cooperate with one or the other country.

The M.E. doesn’t give you a choice between good and bad but only between bad and less bad, in terms of our national interests. Saddam seemed bad and he was. What replaced him, including ISIS, is worse.

The Saudis and the Pakistanis are the biggest threat to the USA by far but the narrative is to not talk about that.

Expand on that. The Sunni are the greatest threat to the USA.

        Greatest *existential* threat.

The corporatocracy has a much larger (negative) impact on most American’s lives, hence Bernie+Trump.

        True, dat, Btn.

Regarding the Sunni, the Kurds are Sunnis, and they are moderate Muslims who help in the fight against ISIS. They aren’t a threat to the U.S., from what I can tell. Moderate Muslims of any kind, whether Shia, Sunni, or whatever, are people who have more in common with Westerners than the extremists do.

There are all kinds of ethnic, religious, and cultural differences that are almost impossible to understand here.

The main thing that we can understand is that the region is too violent and too splintered into warring groups, for us to understand it. So we should stay out of it.

Generally speaking, men are better drivers than women.

If you’ve ever seen my wife drive, you’d agree.

Saudis are the worst of the lot. They’ve been paying off terrorists forever. Iranians are educated people ruled by religious assholes while Saudis suck all around.

I’ve never met anyone from Saudi Arabia, but I’ve met several Iranians in the US. Most were quite normal, except for one who had some very bizarre thinking due to a very sheltered upbringing.

If Iranians are ruled by religious assholes, those religious assholes are the ones that the U.S. government would be dealing with, if trying to form alliances, not the person on the street. So we still can’t call Iran our ally truly. Not can we truly call Saudi our ally. Perhaps we can work with each country in some limited ways on some issues. But to call either one nation a friend seems overly optimistic and out of touch with reality.

The Saudi royals have to walk on eggshells and make reforms slowly because the clerics, who have at least as much power as the royals do, would like to see Saudi go backward into the Stone Age. If the prince pisses off the clerics enough, they could even get an insurrection going and remove him from power.

In the matter of nations, I don’t know that you can judge them by the company they keep, like we can do with individuals. The U.S. aligned with Stalin in WWII. Stalin was a murderous dictator himself but that alliance helped to defeat Hitler, and was well worth it.

Some nations are true friends to the U.S., and have lots of values in common with us, like lots of the European countries do. But some other countries, we may not have a lot of interests in common with, but when we do, sometimes an alliance on that issue can work out e.g . fighting terrorism.

Saudis are literally the worst people in the world – a seeping genital sore on the body of human history. May fire consume their society and turn them all to ashes. Except the Saudi women . . . already hard enough being a Saudi woman.
