This is a significant blow to ACA aka Obamacare. The nation’s largest healthcare insurance company pulling out of your program has to mean something, no?
Believe me, I’m not one of those rich assholes who praise how awesome and amazing the America medical experience is and how we need to stay the course with high cost premiums and policies. I understand the value of a dollar. But I can tell you, with unequivocal confidence, Obamacare is a wanton failure and works for no one but the outright disheveled and homeless.
There is a systematic attack upon the middle to upper middle class, by the government, in this country. All of you Obama dicksuckers praising the virtues of $1,700 per mo family healthcare should perish in automobile accidents.
Obamacare is untenable in its present form.
UnitedHealth, the nation’s biggest health insurer, will cut its participation in public health insurance exchanges to only a handful of states next year after expanding to nearly three dozen for this year.
CEO Stephen Hemsley said Tuesday that the company expects losses from its exchange business to total more than $1 billion for this year and last. He added that the company cannot continue to broadly serve the market created by the Affordable Care Act’s coverage expansion due partly to the higher risk that comes with its customers.
The state-based exchanges are a key element behind the Affordable Care Act’s push to expand insurance coverage. But insurers have struggled with higher than expected claims from that business.
UnitedHealth Group Inc. said it now expects to lose $650 million this year on its exchange business, up from its previous projection for $525 million. The insurer lost $475 million in 2015, a spokesman said.
UNH is trading at an all time high today.

Technically I am upper middle-class and self-employed. ACA has worked for me — my premiums never jumped and their growth has been slower than before ACA. My family is healthy — our healthcare spending in the last 5 years has been limited to check-ups for our young kids. It has been comforting knowing that coverage will be available even if our health concerns increased.
Apparently we are an unusual case and sounds like next year may be a different story.
But through the lens of my personal experience, this seems like just a matter of profits over patients. That’s fine, UNH is a for profit company. But isn’t this a boost for Sanders and his call for a single-payer system. Going to be interesting to see if/how Krugman spins it.
HORSESHIT
I’m a data point. I acknowledged that my experience might be unusual, but if you are saying that I am lying, you’re just mistaken.
It may be horseshit that this favors Sanders, but that was just political speculation.
Do you believe all Americans should have affordable access to healthcare? If so, what’s your solution?
Longview, people like you are not written or spoken about in the popular Right Wing “news sources.” Only people who got a bum deal from Obamacare are written about there. Usually when the matter is investigated, it is found that they didn’t bother to apply, or in some other way were not harmed at all by Obamacare.
Some of these health care companies want to rival Wall Street in the executive bonuses and their profits. If so, Obamacare won’t help them to do that. Nor should it. I cry no tears for UNH.
Fly, you are a ninny.
Confirmation bias is swallowing your ability to view and understand the world around you.
BIG RED TEXT
Thanks for the Red Text.
I now have floaters in my left eye.
Unfortunately the leftist Pelosi PIGS are smiling today. All going according to their North Korea single payer plan.
I too am a data point.
I looked at Obamacare for my wife (not eligible for Medicare for a few years) and the premium is a joke (no credits) with a super high deductible, co- pay, and cap.
Plus her docs aren’t on any of the plans and most graduated from Med School at the Univ .of Grenada.
I can’t imagine trying to get the proper meds and approvals if their was a serious illness like a brain tumor or leukemia.
Obamacare works for those with a pre existing illness who would otherwise be uninsurable and the lower lower middle class as they get big credits (although they still have the high deductibles, etc.
In other words, the middle class (what is left of it) and above is screwed again.
Maybe my perspective is largely because we’ve never really had to use it. Knock wood.
So what did you do? Buy some other insurance, not Obamacare? And was it a lot cheaper?
I was on Obamacare last year, and it was the same Blue Cross plan that I would have been on without registering under Obamacare. And it was a bit cheaper too.
She continues to work for three more years until Medicare age.
She continues to get employer paid health insurance.
Under Obamacare plans (her docs aren’t on them) for the cheapest bronze was about $680/mth with $6500 or so for dedut and a cap with co-pays,etc. around $12,000.
thank you shorts for another four figure green day. i think i’ll go walk the dogs.
Hope they do a lot of pooping because you may not like what you see when you come back.
How long must we wait for Donald Christ Trump to rescue us from this Hell? Can he not be appointed Emperor today? Perhaps by Friday, at the latest?
Everything is hunky-dory up here in Canada
Ah yes. Wait six months for that shoulder you dislocated ? Wait I meant the UK. Sorry.
Fucking lame, bullshit, and untrue. Try traveling outside Goatfuck now and then, see the world.
Meh. The ACA is still better than the mess that preceded it. Yes, it sucks. Yes we can do much better. Everyone bitching, ye gods, at least the cocksuckers at the insurance companies can’t fuck you up the ass when you actually need them. Fuck UNH and all the rest of the bloodsucking weasels, they are not your friend. And thank the fucking Heritage Foundation, they came up with the bloody tampon.
+1
Single payer is what we should get.
ObamaCare is only the worst thing on earth, if you believe the lying Right Wing “news sources.” Otherwise it’s a ton better than what we had before, but not as good as single payer.
United Healthcare knows how to sell plans for businesses for employee plans.
It was slow to enter the ACA exchange market, announced a big expansion in October 2015, then announced a big “whoops, we think we are going to cut back instead” in November 2015.
That’s a company that hasn’t figured out the business yet. Blue Cross and Kaiser, among others, know how to make it work.
The problem United cited, the greater-than-expected cost of exchange enrollees will dwindle over time for two reasons. First, the enrollees have medical needs that were deferred when they didn’t have health insurance. Over time, the difference between their utilization and that of other insured groups will decline. Second, the penalty for not enrolling will be rising, bringing in more people who have been opting to go uncovered.
“United Healthcare is Pulling Out of Obamacare”
That headline is false.
United has decided to stop selling on the ACA exchanges in most of the states where it currently sells. The exchanges are only a part of ACA.
The exchanges are where you have to buy if you want the Federal subsidy — and are not covered by an employer plan, aren’t old enough for Medicare, and can’t get Medicaid because you aren’t poor enough or you live in a state that rejected Medicaid expansion.
People like longview, who don’t qualify for a subsidy, can purchase ACA-compliant policies either through the exchanges, through brokers, or directly from insurers.
Those off-exchange policies are part of ACA, along with Meidcaid expansion coverage and the policies for young adults who get insurance through parental group plans up to age 26.
