How Many Burpees Did You Do Today?

The Crossfit games opened today and it’s only fitting that they begin with the most hated exercise, The Burpee. From personal experience, I can tell you that there is nothing worse than the Burpee exercise, especially for someone 6’4.

Today’s workout was 7 minutes of hell. I, myself, could only muster up 78 in 7 minutes, which isn’t all that good compared to the girls getting above 100 in the video above.

I’ve known about Crossfit for years, but have only been active in a program as of last November. I love the competitive spirit that comes along with the workouts, and the fact that everyone around you is working as hard as they can.

My question to you is, how many burpees did you do today?

Looks strenuous. I will tell you how to beat 78. After staring at the 10-minute video, I think you can add at least 5 or 6 reps, all things being equal, by landing with your feet very wide after the jump. If you do that, the distance between you and the floor for the push up diminishes. Really. Look at the video again. Compare the width of the feet between the two when they land after the jump.

What, no knees to chest? There were a lot of worm like pushups in that video. But impressive none the less.

I got really into burpees 2-3 years ago and I think my cardio has never been better than during that time. I found the best way to develop a good burpee is to put yourself on a schedule. Start with a set amount of burpees every minute and go for as long as it takes you to get to 100. Then add an extra burpee per minute each week. If you can manage to do 7 a minute (14 minutes to reach 100), you’ll be able to do 100 in under 7 minutes in two months. Under 7 minutes, with knees to chest and proper pushups will make your cardio freaking ridiculous.

There’s a girl in the downstairs sandwich shoppe who is a big girl (sort of a female version of RC), but not ridiculously heavy… probably about 25 pounds overweight which is not bad for a woman over 6′(lots of em down here in Kaintuck).

Anyways, she just started the P90X thing about two weeks ago, and the weight loss she’s accomplished in just those two short weeks is astounding. Her only worry is that she’ll break down before she finishes!

I’ve been doing crossfit since sept 2011. It’s great but burpees suck for me also. I’m 6’2 230. They kick my butt.
