Saturday Cinema with Le Fly: Sherlock Homes I & II

As you probably know by now, I’m a big fan of Sherlock Holmes. My favorite teevee show of all-time was House, which was based off the Sherlock Holmes character. The new BBC version of Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, was fantastic. And, despite what a few tolls had to say about Robert Downey Jr. playing the famous detective,  both movies acted out by the former drug addict were smashing successes.

Naturally, I prefer the second movie–because it stars his nemesis Moriarty. The ebb and flow between the two characters was great. Plus, we got to see the famed showdown at the end of the second movie. They did not disappoint. Bottom line, if you haven’t seen these movies and enjoy a good mystery, do yourselves a favor and rent both of them this weekend.

I watched a single episode of House, and turned that show off for good.

Funny story Buccs. When I was traveling as a stage technician for Music Artists, I had a good friend who enjoyed “House”. One night I went off on how fucking much it sucked and would never waste a moment of life watching it. From that night on it became a running joke and every time we would get in to the hotel for a show he or another friend would ask “What are you gonna do tonight? Watch some House in your room?”. Good times.

    Morons.

There’s a reason why he was the highest paid tv actor then and why the show won numerous acclaim. The both of you are bedraggled microbes.

The morons are the ones who watched it enough to allow said salary to be paid and bullshit awards to be bestowed.

The show was clever, witty and funny. Maybe you prefer more of the Jersey shore, non cerebral, genre?

    It’s understandable

Loved the BBC series, liked the movies, the books were the best! Big fan of House – I was trapped in europe with only internet and no TV, and binge-watching episode one through episode last kept me sane.

People’s tastes are different. I am curious as to what people did or did not like about House. I loved it myself, and my reason was the Sherlock Holmes aspect of it that Fly refers to.

House went to superhuman lengths to investigate & discover the causes of the various medical ailments his patients had. Many people like tales of mysteries solved by experts. Most of civilization’s advances & innovations in science, technology etc. come from true stories of that kind.

Fly can I assume you’ve read all of Sir Arthur’s originals? Also, the Basil Rathbone ones are worth your time.

Keep in mind Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character.

I understand it’s fiction. And that’s what makes it even more odd. I had a buddy who read the book as a kid and I remember him saying there were hints thorough out the book on the characters drug use

I’d tell you to just Google it instead of asking a small cadre of posters commenting on a blog post, but I saw the way you tore that guy above a new asshole.

Cocaine. Conan Doyle is fairly explicit about it.

Holmes occasionally uses addictive drugs, especially in the absence of stimulating cases. He uses cocaine, which he injects in a seven-percent solution with a syringe kept in a Morocco leather case. Although Holmes also dabbles in morphine, he expresses strong disapproval when he visits an opium den; both drugs were legal in late-19th-century England. Watson and Holmes use tobacco, smoking cigarettes, cigars and pipes (a socially acceptable habit at the time), and the detective is an expert at identifying tobacco-ash residue.

As a physician Watson strongly disapproves of his friend’s cocaine habit, describing it as the detective’s “only vice”, and concerned about its effect on Holmes’s mental health and intellect.[28][29] In “The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter” Watson says that although he has “weaned” Holmes from drugs, he remains an addict whose habit is “not dead, but merely sleeping”.

Never thought of House as take-off on Holmes. Interesting
Jeremy Brett, for me, has become the definitive Sherlock Holmes. The rest are pretenders to the throne.

House was by far the best show on TV for years hence all the Hugh Laurie accolades and awards.

    All seasons were worth watching.

And do yourself a favor and watch them in order before shitting on the show… you’ll only have to clean up your mess later after actually watching it.

The reason I even began reading iBankCoin & Dr. Fly was b/c of the House profile picture.
