Spinning in Bath Salts

I was reading the SPIN article (via Reformed Broker) about bath salts and I had a few thoughts.  Like meth, what makes these substances “drugs” is that particular chemicals are required to combine in a certain manner.

It’s not like Mr. Science was cooking up this shit on Nickelodeon.

I just don’t understand why law enforcement continues to get it wrong.  Their policy is to hassle and arrest the little guy for selling and/or using this shit.

I imagine that there are only a handful of companies who are able to produce the base ingredients for these drugs, right? I understand that the issue with meth is that Pseudoephedrine manufacturers have an extremely powerful lobby, but they have to be able to track down the source of this bath salt shit, no?

I don’t really have a problem with drugs (I have a problem with drug dealers and crime) as I think people should do what they want to do as long as it doesn’t involve me or anyone else.  When a substance leads someone to take off their clothes in broad daylight, attack a complete stranger and then snack on their face for 18 minutes…that’s a problem that needs to be solved.

If those assholes can track down Osama bin Laden, they can surely slap together a task force to snuff out the source for these bath salt imports, no?

I vow that my next post will contain actual market commentary.

  1. The base ingredients are being produced over seas.

    • Oh, I realize that, but when has that stopped the US before?

I’m pretty sure that there was/is significant involvement in Colombia in an attempt to curb the cocaine trade.

I guess my point with this post (in a roundabout way) is that traditional drugs are based in some sort of plant material. Unless you are able to eradicate every poppy, cocoa or cannabis plant, those drugs are never going away…and we all know that’s never going to happen. It’s a waste of time. There is a definitive source for the synthetic ingredients for meth and bath salts…they don’t occur in nature. Therefore if you dig deep enough, I think you can get to the source and make it prohibitively difficult to produce (if not eliminate it altogether).

In the words of the disgraced Gregg Williams: “kill the head and the body will die”.

I think it just takes a bit of time for the enforcement to catch up. When they first showed up in our state, they were being sold in convenience stores and gas stations. Local TV news ran a story after someone got sick off of them. The owners that were interviewed had no clue what they were and how dangerous they were. The cops were only one half step ahead. After the story ran I think it was the AG filed suit and banned the distribution. I think the whole thing happened within a couple of weeks. Same thing with some of the energy drink alcohol mixes. The AG went after them pretty quickly, but then again, he had a history of being aggressive in that area, and would soon be running for Senate…

Thanks for that. Night on the sun instantly lifts my spirits.

    • Ha, a lot can be said about that song…however, I don’t believe “uplifting” is one of the adjectives I would use.
