The bears have their money setup right here, with the retail/consumer discretionary stocks looking vulnerable in many spots. The XLY, ETF for consumer discretionary space, is undoubtedly still in an overall uptrend in 2012. However, the short-term picture is ominous. As you can see below on the daily chart, after the high volume selling earlier this month, the consumer stocks bounced on tepid volume for roughly the past seven trading sessions. If the bears are pushing for another leg lower, this is the time to do it. This can always be a nasty trap that the bulls have set, but that is not my bet right now. The charts are too heavy for me, and I will not allow myself to suffer from fancy play syndrome.
