Type: Brewery proclaimed “Summer Ale,” my take, “a cross between a bitter and a blonde”
Look: great pour, just enough head with delicious lacing on the sides.
Smell: Slightly citrusy, definite floral overtones with the piercing sweet smell of the malts.
Taste: Initially all you can taste is the Blonde Yeast and the Carastan hops, providing the pallet with notes of sour grass and cinnamon toast, then leaving you with a hop profile that dries the mouth with the sweet citrus bitterness of Cascade and Northern Brewer hops.
All the above bullshit is true, but it sounds dumb as fuck. Here is the deal, this is a great American “Session” beer, meaning you can sit around and drink it all day. It is on the high end of ABV for a session beer at 5%, but this is typical of American Ales. A European session ale is typically 3.8-4.0ABV while the American averages 1% extra, the same goes for IPA, Pale, Bitter, Stout, Porter, etc, but not for Lagers, Pilsners (unless they are some fucked up experiment from a brewery like Coney Brewing that brewed an IPA with Lager Yeast and I believe it is called “Sword Swallower,”) or almost all Weiss (Wheat) beers. This beer is great, especially for someone like me. I can no longer drink four 7%ABV IPA’s a night and not feel like shit in the morning. Plus they are like >200 fucking calories. So if I want to drink beer that has the decent hop profile of an IPA at 7%ABV and a Pale at 6%ABV but it’s only 5%, WINNING. Comparable would be 21st Amendments session ale “Bitter American.” It has more of a drier but less sour Northern California Pale Yeast taste to it. I believe it is available only winter/spring or maybe just spring. It’s even less ABV at 3.9%. If you like to drink beer that has actual flavor, that isn’t all sweet like a wheat beer, and doesn’t taste like a skunks ass, (Industrial Lagers), this is the one, (or two, if you consider Bitter American.) This is a beer you can sit around and drink all day while the kids play in the yard, you’re reading the great works of Longfellow, wrenching on your car, or watching the game. I will most likely take the lady and a six pack to our favorite little semi-private beach with the dogs tomorrow night. Indeud.

Believe it or not, they were selling cases of this at Costco last year, so we decided to try one out. I liked it, though I probably would have been good with a 6er. Living in Portland, these are the things I take for granted and I’m sure to miss when we leave this summer.

Laughing at “All the above bullshit is true, but it sounds dumb as fuck.”…classic. I enjoy my craft/micros & try to pinpoint the malt & hops, but some of these people taste 12 different things. Can the master at Ciceron’s? Probably but when I see a bunch of reviews that tend to repeat I have to call bullshit. At least you broke it down to basics.
Like the mention of Bitter American, probably my favorite Session IPA as it has good taste w/o sacrificing a lot. Still waiting to try Founders All Day.

I personally wouldn’t call it a “session IPA” but I am an arrogant snob asshole like that. I do though believe that it has the best hop profile of any session beer, so actually I guess you are right. I’ve never had Founders but that sounds seriously fucking awesome, thank you so much for letting me know about it. Understand your thoughts, I get the same way. Founders is definitely a top brewery but unfortunately they don’t distribute the All Day IPA in PA. Hope to try next month when I go to MN. Overall a fan of the West Coast style IPA’s, classic hop head guy.
