I’m In The Mood For Another Poll

Forgive me if you hate these things, but I have another question for the public. What are your current thoughts on the 3D printing space, now that we have seen a correction in prices within the industry? Investable for the long term, or stay away? Please vote below:

I think this can morph into a great thread. I started a position in $SSYS recently and it’ll be impossible to time this perfectly so I’ll have to buy in pieces over time. I’m favoring SSYS over DDD because of their industrial dominance. I think this stock can revisit those all time highs one day, but it’s going to be a bumpy road for sure.

Agreed. I see many conflicting opinion on the space. I know little about the industry so open to all comments.

A possibility for sure with oil data tomorrow. However, as oil men we must stand tall and not waiver from short term fluctuations.

Yes — I’ll probably start soon by putting money in slowly, over 12 months in 12 equally sized chunks.

I’ll probably have all 4: DDD, SSYS, VJET, and XONE 2 main allocations to DDD and SSYS and 2 smaller to XONE and VJET

I’ve been watching ADSK’s investments in 3D printers. Their architectural and product design software business helps to make 3D investible for at least limited modeling and prototyping applications. I think this is essentially the R&D for the industry.

I have no desire for printers that print out pizzas and that sort of thing, tho I’m sure some dumb money will go to this area to die.

What about organ printing via ONVO?

Don’t know enough about it. If it’s for customizing cartilage-like structures for other cells to grow around, like tracheae and such, I could see it catching on. Will check on the stock you mention to see what they think the total market will be.

I don’t care for them in the long-term (>1 year), but in the short-term a lot of them look like they’re putting in bottoming patterns. Double-bottoms and fake-breaks all over the place.

RC – I have no idea how the stocks will perform, but check out how the 3D printers have upped the action figure game! http://www.blessthisstuff.com/imagens/stuff/michael-jordan-collectible-figure.jpg

I hear comments that the quality isn’t great, the concept is good, it’s good for “cute” fast production. But the quality, price and scale is not matching with what you can do w/ traditional techniques just yet. I would hazard though, that what will crush it (good) here would be a company using 3-D printing for an edge, rather than just a straight 3-D printing company. Makes me think of phones pre-iphone, need a S.Jobs who uses 3-D printing to make a new killer “thing” we didn’t know we needed.

I voted to ‘stay away’, but not because of valuations (no opinion on fundamentals).

I was talking to a bunch of people over past couple of years to figure out some business using 3D printers. On two occasions we went as far as business plan. Unfortunately nothing useful or feasible turned out.

This industry is a dead-end in its present form.
Still keep stocks on watch list – love new technologies…

3D printing has been around for decades, it’s called CNC which can make any shape from any material.
