Selling Like Don Draper into the Close

Draper

Swisher Sweets are Smoo-o-o-o-ooth.
_____________________

I’d walk a mile… for a Camel… (and to buy that last piece of that January [[SPY]] put position– 50 more @ $2.89-2.92.)

Bryl-Creem, a little dab’ll do ya…. (just like a concentrated position in sold calls and targetted puts will “smooth out” the rough spots in a downdraft).

Winston Tastes Good, like a cigarette should… (so do 20 more [[GDX]] March 50 calls sold at $8.00 a pop.)

Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco Treat…  (not unlike [[PTM]] , which has stayed strong — and unsold– while it’s brother PM’s have sweated.  That may change tomorrow, as I may take a third off, despite my lack of a full position as of yet.)

N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestles make the very best… (chocolate, maybe but not market hedges.  I expect we’ll have a bit of a global pullback, so even the traditonal consumer product hedges may be of little use.   Note that Brazil took a dive today from [[EWZ]] ‘s tops over $80.   A little [[EEV]] may be a choice smoothner her for a week or so.)

The best part of waking up, is Folger’s in your cup… (but maybe not Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. [[GMCR]] if it breaks through this near term support at $60, right here.  Next very strong support is $55, which I would consider “back up the truck territory,” on a bounce.)

Best of all, it’s a Cadillac… (but not if you’re a GM shareholder, Ford Motor Company [[F]] is actually looking good here on a pullback to $8.50.  I’m sure Mr. Cane Thaler is well pleased)….

Hey Jake “Bear” Gint – Good call yesterday. I kept a close eye and dumped a lot around 3:15 today. What’s your call for tomorrows tape? Just joined PPT yesterday but have been following you guys for a while. You and Henry have helped me a lot. Entertaining as hell, too!

How bearish are you Jake…..I remember last time you called this about 60 days ahead of the class—-and then the credit crash. What are you seeing?

Who would want to hire in this environment? Mom and Pops are just grinding by in the new normal.

I don’t want to hire anyone, even though I may need to. How fucked up is that?

I have absolutely no idea how to gauge my firm HC costs next year. None. Thanks, Pelosi/Reid/Obama.

That said, I am not “full on bear” here. Too much liquidity for that yet. But we need a pullback.

And it was NOT 60 days. Geez.

We’re doing stupid shit like that too but really everybody does it.
Stress out your existing employees till they start walking and then you know it’s time to hire.

I will be one of them leaving early next year although to honest I kind of planned my departure a while ago, this just speeds it up a few months.

GMCR I told fly the other day 55 was a chart target and he threatened to ban me. Glad to hear you also think so.
I did a pretty big Gann chart on the GDX, I’m heavy short for my account size. What’s your target on it?

      C’mon.

The theme was “old advertising slogans.” You know? Don Draper — the Mad Men guy?

Swisher Sweets — and any mass manufactured cigars — are atrocious.

Hand rolled, Avos, Griffins, Davidoffs, Romeo y Juliettas, etc.

Whatever arrests your cilia, mon frere.
Sure, I’ve seen an episode or two of that histo-drama, the tobacco companies must have had one helluva party when that one made it past pilot. Kalle Lasn does not approve, I’ll wager. Oh sure, the storyline intermittently skims over the dangers of smoking, but more importantly to tobacconists it paints the picture of the pleasure incessantly….
When it comes to ad men, I prefer Richard E Grant’s character in How To Get A Head in Advertising as what I would imagine to be a far more realistic portrayal of the archetype.

IE: you’re a simple domeless wonderboy for being so blithe. Either that, or one massive, coiled pile of excrement for worshipping so vile a creature.

DMG, so you dragged a winning call out of me and you were too much of a big girl’s blouse yourself to go toe-to-toe on it. Get over it, pal. Better yet, try adding something of value to the conversation. You know: like a pick or a call, or a quantifiable prediction, SOMETHING, because your persistent interest in my sexual orientation is beginning to get downright weird and creepy.
My wife says she might have a friend she can try and set you up with in Toronto if you like, but she suggests you try not to appear so desperate when you meet him.

    Hey Jake,

I think you’re right in being bearish on the market. I’m shorting the SPY and selling my miners (the miners are subject to the pull of the broader markets)…but I have no plans to let go of any of my GLD or SLV. I welcome a dip and the opportunity to add more to these positions.

Here’s the one reason I AM selling some SLV and GLD…. I think the miners (on a pullback, as you mention) will offer a much bigger bang for my buck in the next up wave.

No mistake, I still have a schit-tonne of both, just less.

    Jake,

I got shaken out of gold PMPIX ( abx, nem, fcx, gg) totally on the day of the Dubai incident as I couldn’t quite think it all through and of course Mrs. 50 was trying to go shopping, while I was trying to think.

Wondering if I should start legging back in here today at say 10 to 15% or wait for more pull-back, say Fib. 1104?

    What you think?

Not saying it will happen but how weird would it be if the actions of ABX mark a top and a bottom in gold.
They were fully hedged with gold at about $280 in 2000 and just last week they announced that they got rid of the remaining hedges.
Almost like when the Bank of England sold the last of the intended lot of gold in 2000 (or in’99, I forget), right at the bottom.
