John Sayles is the first name that comes to my mind when I think of underrated writer/director talents. I believe his two best projects to date are the fabulous Eight Men Out (1988) and Lone Star (1996). Lone Star is a mystery-drama set in a Texas border town, and unfolds in a way that presents a gripping story, without trying so hard that it demeans the audience (as many Hollywood films tend to). The film features accomplished and highly credible Texas actors, namely Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, and a young(er) Matthew McConaughey.

Folks should have a look at his other films too. One of the most brilliant film makers I’ve ever come across. His films are so psychologically accurate. Most films I see, I keep thinking “Real people don’t act this way.” But his films are like being a fly on the wall, watching people. He must be a very keen observer of real people.
I miss the old days when I could go to Blockbuster and rent just about any movie. I refuse to join Netflix because subscriptions piss me off and Apple has limited options. Redbox is really the only product I enjoy but selection is so limited I find myself driving to random Redboxes.
I wish I had nothing to lose such as 2 years ago when I was renting an apt. while in college in the good old days. Used to download bit torrents like a mad man.
