While Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List (1993) comes to mind for many in terms of the most riveting Holocaust film ever made, I view the subtitled Europa Europa (1990) as the best in the genre. Europa Europa tells the incredible real-life story of Solomon Perel, a Jewish boy in Nazi Germany who is separated from his family, but survives when he is able to pass as a Hitler Youth.
The following scene reveals how amazing it is that he was able to pass for an “Aryan Nazi,” in the face of the brainwashing happening all around him (He is the brunette called to stand up to be examined by his Hitler Youth teacher).

Never seen that one. Will check it out..
1993 was a great year for movies. Another great WWII movie in 1993 I especially enjoyed was “The Remains of the Day”.
Proof in my opinion that 1993 may have been one of the top 5 years for movies besides the aforementioned….
-Fugitive, The (1993)
-Philadelphia (1993)
Love the Saturday Night at Chess Cinemas blog. Keep ’em coming.
Tonight the lady and I will be watching “The Adjustment Bureau”.
One of my favs is “Empire Of The Sun”, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring John Malcovich and a 12 year old Christian Bale. The musical score by John Williams is pretty good too. Story is about a young boy growing up in a wealthy British family in Shanghai at the outset of the war who gets seperated from his family and interred in a Japanese prison camp. I think the film was released in 87 or so. Check it out if you haven’t already, it’s an interesting take on the war that isn’t often told.
Yes, I remember 1993 fondly. There were some good flicks that year. I also remember Europa Europa, it was a good movie, but a little too much focus on circumcision.
