Nice entry.
3G = mucho dinero for AAPLo
3G = much dinero not for Apple but for Vodafone and AT&T …. they are the ones with the 2 year contracts. iPhone is just a commodity device now at $199.
After some error messages I was able to download the iphone 2.0 software on my 1st gen iphone to access the apps. So far I have downloaded about 10 free apps and they have been great. Can’t wait until someone comes out with an app that gives turn-by-turn voice navigation and real-time streaming quotes with order executions. Planning on getting the 3G model this weekend.
Most analysts have already built models for iphone earnings x est. sales but I have not seen any analyst come out with estimates on how much revenue the iphone apps (if any) will generate. AAPL currently will take a 30% of app revenue. AAPL is patterning the iphone apps similar to the iTunes model to drive growth in hardware sales. In this case, I tend to agree with Gene Munster that AAPL has a lot more upside.
QCOM is the way to play the iphone and all of 3G for that matter. I’m long QCOM and looking at AAPL now.
All the AAPL stores around me are sold out already after being assured that they would have plenty in stock yesterday.
AAPL is a bunch of bastards, playing head games and shit, but I still want my iphone.
Leonard: I went to the Apple store today (Saturday) and they were sold out of the black 8gig. Last year at the same time I also went on the 2nd day after the launch and walked out with a 4gig. With the 8gig selling out, I think the demand was greater than Apple had anticipated, even with with the experience they learned from last year. Last year, I don’t think Apple really knew how many consumers would pay the $499 price. For the 3G, I suspect the sales numbers will be huge.
the iPhone is not a commodity device. The $190 price is the price att sells it, not the price apple sells it to att. Somewhere someone stated that aapl is making more per phone in margin and will also sell more in volume at the sibsidized prices. These things are still being sold at around four hundred a crack to the wireless companies. Genius.
If Apple is so fucking smart, why did they partner with such a shit cell service as AT&T?
When they use Verizon, I’ll think about getting their device, not before.

aapl partnered with the mediocre AT&T because they were able to cut a much better deal than with Verizon. At least they didn’t partner with super shitty Sprint!
Yes, appl gets much more than 199 from AT&T (the 2-year contracts help AT&T recover the deficit). Their margins are typically apple-sized, which means hefty. The move to 3G and the wider world-wide distribution channels will make iPhone volume soar. MSFT’s massive blunder, otherwise known as Vista, will keep Mac sales soaring.
The only thing that keeps me from holding a big position in aapl is the continued specter that there could just be something to those rumors about Stevo’s health.
