Why Nike is Fucked up….. a customers perspective

I’ve worn Nike since I was in High School – I can still remember my first pair because I was cutting grass and it took mowing 6 yards for me to afford my first pair of leather cortez. Look at them – classic lines, nice basic colors. The fact they’re white means you could wear ’em with Levis and a polo shirt or a pair of shorts and a tee shirt without looking like a dork

Spring forward 25 years and I’m still a Nike customer, though to be honest, I really don’t want to be. Somehow men’s athletic shoes have become clown shoes. Finding a pair of decent looking running shoes or cross trainers has become a frustrating search across the web and stores. The last pair of Nike I bought that I really liked was 3 years ago. They’re on the left and I found them at Dick’s  while I was getting baseball cleats for one of my sons. They now have a hole on one side the soles are ripping out. I wish I had bought 3 pair. The ones next to them  are what I’ve “Settled” on beacuse they were the least obnoxious looking I could find. Both pair look like they belong on Crusty the clown instead of Jordan, Bo. or Bird. It wasn’t till they arrived that I realized how much I hated them.

I also hate sending shit back and waiting in lines so now they just take up space in my closet.

Fuck you Nike.. Just Fuck you

I thought I was the only guy that had this problem. The Nikes I currently own have holes in both and the soles are almost gone.

I settled on these 2 years ago specifically because they were the least obnoxious.

Does every single shoe they make have to be fucking inspired by NASA.

I don’t need my shoes to “perform in zero G”.

I just don’t want constant blisters when I run.

    • Spot on – it’s like our demographic (long time customers who just want a decent looking / performing shoe) aren’t part of the Marketing plan up in Beaverton

  2. Try being an old guy like me who just wants basic tennis shoes in white or black, no logos.

    • I’m in my 40s so according to my kids and Nike I’m in the old guy group.

Before they put us out on our ice floe, I think Keds still sells what you may be looking for

They seem to be popular with some of the “hipster” crowd I see out

  3. Nike was cool when I was 16 and I really cared what logo was on the side of my shoe, instead of how they performed.

Now, for running you can’t beat the performance of an asics, saucony or new balance for the price level. Pay more for a worse shoe? No thanks. Although I will admit all three can get just as obnoxious in terms of looks.

    • For me athletic shoes are what I wear anytime I’m doing anything but meetings or out someplace nice. In other words 90% of the time.
I actually used to wear Asics (I think they were called Tiger at one time?) back when I wrestled in HS.

I could never wear New Balance because that Big “N” on the side reminds me of Nebraska Football (up there the “N” stands for Knowledge)

  4. Over the years, I’ve worn’em all. I could go thru a pair of Nikes in a week on the tennis court when I was playing alot.

These days it’s K-Swiss for tennis and New Balance for just about everything else … Casual, Running …

    .

    • My wife and I have talked about getting into Tennis, but somehow we never get around to it. Looks like a good workout.

It’s so damn hot this summer the nightly neighborhood Basketball games we have in my driveway have even stopped

  5. Try a pair of Keen’s for cross training/running/walking or their boots for hiking. I hate to take mine off in the evening.

    • Had not heard of them – just Googled and they look like Timberlands. Next time I need hiking shoes / boots I’ll check ’em out. Thanks,

  6. Nike has lost me as a customer due to poor design.

My initial Nikes with the air-filled heal gave out after a year (sprung an leak), so I bought a pair of Nike running shoes about 4 months ago, after finding one pair in the store that didn’t look like clown shoes. But after a few runs in the shoes my knees were hurting.

So I decided to buy a different pair of Nikes, again the one pair that was non-clown, and those also resulted in sore knees and poor fitting on the upper front part of my foot.

So I bought the first pair of New Balance cross-trainers that looked conservative. As a result my knees have been fine during running ever since.

    • I’ve got a small miniscus tear that I never got scoped, but other than an occassional twinge when playing basketball I’ve been lucky the knees have held up.

That said, all my running is on a treadmill or eliptical (my Life fitness 9500 is behind the shoes) beacuse my lower back started tightening up when I ran on the streets (maybe it was the Nikes) back in my 30s

  7. I bought my first pair of running shoes in the 60’s when there were two choices – Adidas red stripes & Adidas green stripes. My first & only Nikes were the Waffle Trainers. They never felt right for me after that. Now I wear Asics.
