Life Lessons from Chris Herren

I’ll be back later tonight with market-focused content. But last night at the Annual iBankCoin Dinner the Option Addict and I were discussing legendary Massachusetts basketball player Chris Herren.

Herren was a nationally-regarded player (he was a member of the 1994 McDonald’s High School Basketball All American Team) out of Durfee High School in Fall River, MA., who played at Boston College, then Fresno State, then in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics. He eventually played overseas. However, he was plagued throughout his career by a terrible drug problem which eventually limited his considered talent and potential.

He recently cleaned himself up for good and now serves as a very blunt and inspirational speaker about the topic.

In the following video he gives a great speech to the Memphis Tigers college basketball team.

I urge you to take the time and check it out.

Oy, reminds me of a former roommate that ended up being a secret heroin addict that went from offers from almost every Division I football team, to just playing for Kent State, to being a jobless thief, all by 22. Had to kick him out; in a different world I might have wanted his autograph instead.

For those who don’t already know, Herren was a mother fuckin OG. Think about it… as a guard he made the freaking McDonalds All American team! I shit you not, the man is a basketball legend in Mass. and that is not hyperbole. I know, I know but he went to Fresno State. However, at that time at Fresno State Tark the Shark came back home and broke every NCAA rule to bring a monster team to Fresno. Herren was one of the best college basketball players I ever watched. He was god-like to fans from Mass. to Cali. I honestly can’t believe he survived. This guy is a true survivor. I really hope more and more people hear about how much he has gone through and how much he has accomplished.
