I lived in Louisiana my whole life and have had my fair share of hurricanes. Growing up in New Orleans my family would always evacuate us in fear of what we saw during Katrina. As a kid I hated having to evacuate, I was the one who always wanted to stay home. If you sat on the interstate for 16 hours to make a 2 hour dive, then you know what I mean.
When Katrina hit, I thought I’d never see it, but everything my dad preached when I was a kid came true– water filled the city to rooftops. I was lucky enough to have moved on before the storm– to my present location Lafayette, LA. I housed a bunch of evacuees (including my family) and we had about as good of a time as one could imagine. It was horrible, seeing everyone lose it all.
Hindsight, it turned out great for some people. FEMA came through with free money, and it was like one big Christmas party– with people buying all sorts of egregious shit. Just about everyone I knew was insured, so they took the money, remodeled their house, and carried on.
I always thought this was a mistake. People should have been focused on starting over somewhere else. “A New Beginning.” Now, three years later to this day, they are faced with the same situation. (Why people wanted to rebuild in a bowl is beyond me)
If I had it my way, I wish the storm would just evaporate into the Gulf. Just last night I had to battle maniacs at Wal-Mart fighting for the last case of water. If I have to evacuate, I will sit in bumper to bumper traffic for hours. Let’s not forget if I stay, no power for a few days.
However there’s nothing I can do now, just sit and wait it out.
Most likely I will use this time to buy more National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. [[NOV]] & Valero Energy Corporation [[VLO]] , I already have everything else I need.

I took down sol, looks like it’s ready for a rally
Good luck this weekend, RC. Like you said, preparation is the key. Stay high & dry.
NOV & VLO calls; +REA is my play for the weekend. Priced in or not, when Gustav gets close to our coasts, oil will go up, dragging along with it all its associates.
RC- Have a great weekend.
As long as LSU gets its game in all will be good!
Agreed.
Wanna be my bitch?

I’ve been nursing a small position in HOKU for a week in @ 5.40. I’m starting to actually like this trade longer term and want to add here. HOKU should close well on the week and offer up the highest weekly close in 3 months. It’s actually looking constructive for that serial under performer. This stock is prone to huge gaps based on contract news.
I like the risk reward here.
HOKU 6.05
Good luck with everything to the entire Ragin Cajun family.
May the four winds blow you safely home.
Crude is barely up a percent for the week and so is Nat gas. Dig, Rig and Nov are negative for the week. Laday freekin Da!!!
Gustav,
Listen up closely, I will sell NOV north of 80. And, as far as VLO goes I’ve been building a position since the low 30s.
I own no positions in DIG & RIG.
Now go fuck up some rigs while leaving me alone.
Don’t forget to tape your windows. I’ve been through a number of hurricanes myself. Best hurricane memory… Iniki…I ran from the cops because i didnt want to go to the nearest shelter. How dumb was that?
Have fun playing cards all weekend. At least you get candle light dinners every night. stay safe.
be safe my friend……..
Stay safe RC – don’t party too hard at that App State game up in BTR
Good luck RC. Hopefully you’re out of the path further north. I’m curious if this all blows over and has zero affect on the stock market come Tues.
Powerful post. Good luck RC
The storms are lining up one after the other, the hurricane season arrived with a vengeance this year, and Gustav seems to be taking direct aim on the Cajun.
RC, give us a post once in a while how you are doing (as long as you have power).
Gwar: I may be an ASSHOLE, buy you have BUSHY EYEBROWS AND BAD BREATH. So there.
The guy creates a post talking about how his father always took precautions to evacuate the family as hurricanes approached when he was a kid. He lived through Katrina and saw the devastation first hand. He’s had almost a week advance notice. He’s young and clearly capable of moving to safter ground.
He’s ignoring forecasts, the lessons and widom taught to him by his father, and his own personal experience with Katrina. He clearly understands the risks and has decided to put himself in harms way.
I don’t wish bad things on him or anyone. But it’s obvious he’s being either reckless or lazy. He’s decided to take me on, and if I get the best of him, he’ll be my bitch.
So go trim your BUSHY EYEBROWS, ASSWIPE.
Lissen Gustav, it’s a hard decision and you can only make that call if you’re there. It’s certainly could be dangerous but he’s the person who can weigh up all the factors best. We’re all worried for him but I can understand why he doesn’t evacuate.
They almost always evacuate my neighborhood as a precaution because it’s a barrier island. My first serious hurricane that looked like it was going to make landfall near me I made the mistake of evacuating, I would have been better off and safer in my house with no power. There were no hotel rooms available anywhere and it was a huge hassle for several days. The shelter for my area is the local high school which is much older and less hurricane-ready than my house. Then I couldn’t get back over the bridge to my house two days later because the police had it closed. I upgraded the roof on my house, got a generator, and keep supplies of food and water, and if possible try to stay in my house. If necessary I also have a place I can go inland. Don’t forget Ragin is 40 miles from the coast.
