Giants and Bears Packed Off

Grossman Screwed
And Yes, Rex Grossman Was Screwed, Too
_______________________________________________

Didn’t take long for the first of my semi-facetious predictions to fail did it?  Well it did, and my Giants, despite winning today over a semi-revitalied Rex Grossman-led Redskin team, were drubbed out of the playoffs by the Green Bay Fudge Packers, who beat them this week and dah Bears (see above) today.

There’s nothing like just missing the playoffs to make for the worst of all possible worlds.   Despite a 10-6 record, my team will be on the sofa next weekend, and — adding insult to injury — will likely keep the Angry Leprechaun, Tom Coughlin and his offensive (in the literal sense) coordinator, Captain Kangaroo Kevin Gilbride in the driver’s seat for at least another year.   The final coup de grace — we’ll get a crappy “playoff level” draft pick because there will be playoff teams that have worse records picking behind us.

I guess I will become a Jet fan for the few short weeks for it to take them to snuffed out by Eli’s older brother or some similar such ignonimy.  Gosh knows there’s no one in the NFC honorable enough to root for, and I am beginning to really despise the Packers, I’ll have you know.

But never as much as Dawg Killah and the Eagles, no fear.

As for me, I ended the year up a gigantaload.  So much so, compared to year end 2009, that you’d probably not even believe me, so I won’t boast about it.  Suffice it to say that I was still piling on win in huge amounts even on the last day of the year, despite being about 40% hedged and having about 30% in cash.   Ironically, my largest single gain on December 31st was Monsieur’s FTK, which I do believe I shall keep for a while, ovah heah.

I also believe AVL — the old Avalon Metals now on the Amex Exchange — will continue to shine it’s bizarre functional-if-rare metallic lights on my precious laden portfolio.   I will have more to say on the rare earths as we move forward– I am digging diligently as you read this…

Without question silver will continue to shine, and SLW, PAAS, SSRI, MVG, SVM, CDE, HL, and yes EXK will continue to shine.   I will let you know when I will begin piling in on a leveraged basis soon enough.  I think the dollar remains on the edge of the knife (it is rallying as I type this), but until it breaks, I will remain positioned as I am.

We will also look into the ags, and I think it is time to re-recognize the farmer Jacksonians — ANDE and MON again, as strong picks going forward.  TC and TCK, the molybdenum brothers, should also perform here.

I haven’t posted the Jacksons as of late, but if you were to have held them since this blog’s inception (May 1st, 2009), you’d be up 125% right now, and that’s with a negative return on both MON and TBT, both of which I urge you to continue to accumulate this year.

Stick with me kid, we are going places in 2011….

All is right with the world again, JakeGint is back to his senses.

I hope you look forward to the Patriots crushing the Saints in the Superbowl as much as I do!

I like EXK, CGR, and TLR for 2011. See a theme?

Saints or Atlanta doesn’t matter … lots of records set in Foxboro today as prep for the next Championship

I don’t see the Saints getting there. Atlanta more likely, but the best teams are in the AFC this year. I like the Pats chances, but Pittsburgh is going to be real tough.

On the NFC side, Green Bay seems to be on a mission, but the Dog Killah is the single most likely guy to turn a game around on his own ability alone… maybe since Elway.

    Jake,
We “went” places in 2010 thanks to your guidance in the PMs! I have been accumulating TBT, a pick somewhat jinxed by Doug Kass blessing it the pick of the decade or whatever…Only when Fly jumps into it will I be convinced it is ready to run to 50…Thank you for all you and the other IBC bloggers do!

    Jake,
    1. No need to insult Captain Kangaroo.
    2. Go Jets (I guess).
    3. Agree about the Packers.
    4. Nice job in 2010 (I wish I was able to hold my winners as well as you did).
    5. Good luck in 2011.

Thanks, but it’s an experience thing, this “holding winners.” It’s hard every time, but it gets easier as the experience accumulates. Jesse Livermore’s advice was helpful too… sometimes it’s better to do nothing, and you can skip from step one to step three (step two being sell and/or buyback) without the agita and the transaction costs.

This is the biggest thing I’m working on as far as my trading goes. And yes, it does get easier with experience.

You might not think anyone would believe you about 2010 % gains, so out of sheer curiousity on my behalf, could you “make something up”?

I’ve pulled up all my hedges at breakeven, and am slowly accumulating PM shares with my 25% cash position. Many of these, such as AG and AGQ, are so pricey now that it’s hard to pull the trigger.

My worry, of course, is that I’m going to get whipsawed. It wouldn’t be the first time. AGQ in particular will really punish any timing mistakes if it turns out that our intermediate correction is only “rain delayed”, not cancelled.

My only option is to average in over the next week or so. I may use SIL instead of AGQ.

The Livermore reference is apt. It takes discipline to do absolutely nothing.

The flip side of doing nothing is not admitting when you are wrong and then riding things down which I do all the time. Which could happen sooner rather then later after things have been so groovy. Both sides are hard and rules either way often mock you….stock goes up after you sell for a loss or a nominal gain.

Jake your picks have been mostly bang on this past year. When things don’t work out, when do you admit when you are wrong(for the time being) and decide to sell. Do you always have an exit in mind? Stops? Does it change when you buy a “riskier” stock vs a more “stable” big cap…ie EXK vs UPS.

Your last sentence is the most cogent.

If it’s a risky volatile name that I know is either going to boom or bust, I cut ASAP if it busts.

If it’s a long term investment that I want to hold for the grandkids, when they come, like UPS, MON and RGLD, then I am much more sticky.

But even then, I’ll usually sell some. For example, with MON, I sold a good bit over $125, but then held the rest, and started accumulating again in the sixties, all the way down to the 40’s.

So definitely two different kinds of styles, depending on the nature of the investment.

    Mr. Gint

I am a lifelong Giants fan as I grew up in the bronx. It blows they are not getting into the playoffs and that they are getting the 19th draft pick. If they had decided to fire Coughlin and Killdrive, Bill Cower would have immediately been hired without question. I would have enjoyed seeing how “The Chin” would have handled the New York media. I live in Baltimore currently. Pittsburg’s media is the same as Baltimore’s media. They are not media, they are fans. You know it as well as I do, when the Giants foul up the media deficates on them from a great height. That never happens in Pittsburg (and if it does it is not half as bad as in New York). Cower is good coach who is quite possibly the biggest meathead coach in the history of the NFL (If you can think of a coach who is a bigger meat-stick please let me know). I can see the NY media baiting Cower. I can see it being funny to watch also.

I have no interest in any team in the NFC winning the Superbowl. I am rooting for the Jets also. Like you I hate the Eagles more than any other team at the moment. I could care less who goes to the Superbowl as long as it is not the Eagles I wouldn’t sweat it though. They aren’t going to the Superbowl. Vick won’t hold up. He has been taking a beating lately. Philly’s O-line is in shambles. They won’t be able to hang with Chicago’s D line, or Green Bay as Vick struggles against a 3-4. The worst Eagle is that showboating ahole Desean Jackson. I hope Kenny Phillips gives him concussion on a legal hit.

Grab a cellophane raper off a cigarette pack Mr. Gint and stand it up. It represents the Eagles trophy case just as well as the Chunky Soup in this picture. http://www.bigblueview.com/2009/1/21/729531/eagles-trophy-case

LOL. That’s awesome, although I like McNabb a heckuva lot better than the Dog Killah.

I think Cowher would have trouble w. the NY media as well. I’d prefer Spags, m’self.

As for the loyal media, yeah, we have it down here as well. Only in NY do they eviscerate their own team. It’s a tough crowd in NY.
