    Great speech.

Nonetheless, she is a dog sledder.

I’d rather have a U.S. General as VP.

    But that’s just me.

I’ve been hoping for months that McCain would pick Palin, but never believed he would do it.

To say I was thrilled about her nomination would be an understatement.

She rocked tonight and, win or lose in November, I am convinced we heard the first national speech by the first female president of the United States.

    Palin 2012.

Fly, she is the only thing that is going to keep Obama from moving into the White House. Hypotheticals don’t matter any more. If you don’t want Obama, then you must support Palin.

Not to get into partisan bickering, (in fact, I’m an independent), but I thought the speach was very light in substance and filled with cheap rhetoric. Not my idea of a homerun speach, as most in the media have labeled it –just a standard politician’s call to arms. Judging by the near-unanimous nod Palin received from the punditry tonight on the networks, I seem to be alone in my view. I got the impression that the media felt almost guilty for having panned Palin so much in recent days about the teenage pregnancy and the thin resume. So, as a way of reconciling, they decided to commend her for a job well done, regardless of what was actually said.

Rather than to offer political cheap shots, I think she should’ve put more emphasis on the issues McCain stands for in contrast to the Obama-Biden ticket. This wouldve been the best means by which to assert her strength in light of all the lingering suspicions that shes too much of a lightweight. Last week, Biden sought to discredit McCain’s judgement by offering specific examples in which McCain made bad calls and Obama happened to be right (though, admittedly, Biden did leave out mention of the surge, which Obama was wrong on). In his speech, Biden touched on his personal bio (which Palin did deliver on well tonight), but also went on to specifically touch on the issues.

Unlike Geraldine Ferraro, Palin looks comfortable in the public eye. That’s a plus, but she remains untested on her ability to demonstrate control and mastery of the dozens of national issues she will be quizzed on come October 2nd.

There has been, inevitably, a parallel drawn in the press betwen Obama and Palin, in that they each represent a sparkle of excitement on their respective tickets. Agreed. However, Obama has layed out his plan, regardless of what one may think of it, on the national stage time and time again. Let’s be honest, Obama is no accomplished candidate (no executive experience, short stint in the US Senate and state senate time in Illinois), but he’s been on the presidential campaign trail for 18 months now, debating issues, beating down a relentless Clintonian political machine, and bouncing back from near-death political suprises (ie. Reverend Wright). The guy’s grown a second layer of skin on the national stage. Palin’s perceived provincial (ie. Alaska-centric) view of the world worries people in the GOP.

Today’s speach shouldve been taken as an opportunity to allay those fears with a demonstrable command of at least some of the positions Campaign McCain will be selling to voters. She let the opportunity slip her by. Again, this is not about who’s the better agent of change, but simply, who will have a better time survining or even excelling (in the eyes of voters) when the debate begins to zero in on historical references, economic stats, and specific policy proposals.

Palin did none of that tonight and, for that, I believe conservatives will continue to sweat and twiddle their thumbs leading up to the VP debate in October. In sum, exciting candidate, but very flimsy speech.

All the candidates have speech writers. Period. “You like Obama’s speeches because they are written by his writer.” See how moronic that comment really is? Serves no purpose, and does not further your argument, unless you are giving yourself sour grapes.

So tell us about Obama’s community organizing. I’ll wait while you google it.

Who said anything about feminism? Why is it suddenly about feminism, but it wasn’t with Hillary? Jeez…arguments are especially weak and easy to destroy tonight.

And now she’s a “bimbo.” Way to go. Bravo. What slur can you come up with for Obama?

    I didn’t think so.

She’s very capable but completely unprepared. This is going to kill her career in the future. She’s going to have some serious repairing to do.

When people ask about her foreign policy chops and they reply with the fact the Alaska is close to Russia, that’s not a good thing.

Obama writes his own speeches. Yes he has a writer to help but he basically writes them himself. So it’s not all the same.

What do you want to know about Obama’s community organizing. They were disparaging ALL community organizers. Those are people that work for little or nothing to help people in need. Real nice. Not gonna go over well.

It’s about feminism because anytime anybody asks about her resume or credentials they come back with “would you ask that to a man?”. And the answer to that is, she would not be on the ticket if she were a man.

Recusancy, you are big on opinions, but light on facts. Boy, that sounds familiar.

I asked you specifically about his CO experience. You bring back….NOTHING.

So…where are your facts about Obama’s speech writing? You have none. You know not whether he writes 10 or 90 percent of his own speech.

I have no clue where this stuff about feminism is coming from.

Lets put it this way though.

Would Obama be on the ticket if he weren’t half African-American? Oh, shocking, you are going to fein offense to that.

See, Obama is now stymied. His best arguments against McCain are moot, and if he attacks Palin, he attacks the very same qualities in his own person.

    Wood,

I love you, man. Really do. And I appreciate your opinion that Palin is more appealing than Obama. But I’d like to know how you “know” that Palin will “destroy” Biden in a debate. If Biden starts the debate by asking her to name the capital of Georgia, it’ll probably be game over right there.

The fact that Palin will spend the next month insulated from the national press while trying to memorize international events and issues which Biden might touch on is not my idea of a killer debater.

You loved her tonight, but dont forget, the environment was 100% controlled: the speach was prepared by strategists, she spent the last 24 hours rehearsing the speech in a room at the convention and a teleprompter flashed the lines. Not that there’s anything wrong with any of that. The McCain campaign is crafting a political message right now. That’s fine. Your excited and galvinized as a supporter. Fine as well. But to extrapolate with certainty that Palin will school Biden in the October debate because she proficiently read 40 minutes worth of lines in an inspirational way is wishful thinking. I love your daily market analyses, but I think you’re way off on a limb here on Palin.

Nope. Need I remind you that Obama wanted to surrender and just walk away from the fight?

Need I remind you that Palin has a son going off to war so she has a personalinterest in making sure we do things right?

They were disparaging ALL community organizers.

Man up. Obama dissed every mayor in every small city in America last week, roughly 200,000. I know what a mayor does, what does a community organizer do other than give away other people’s money?

Besides, you only find community organizers in large cities and they already vote Democrat, so antagonizing that group isn’t a big deal.

But, diss small towns and cities, then you diss the people who live there, and they far outnumber the relatively few marxist-oriented community organizers in Chicago and New York.

What the hell do you want to know about his CO experience? He graduated Columbia in NY and a guy asked him to come to Chicago to help out for a while. He went and worked with churches to help Chicago southsiders to get back on their feet after steel plants closed. He helped people in the projects get the landlord and the city to fix the asbestos in their apartments. He gave them a voice.

How he writes his own speeches.

Obama takes an unusually hands-on approach to his speech writing, more so than most politicians. His best writing time comes late at night when he’s all alone, scribbling on yellow legal pads. He then logs these thoughts into his laptop, editing as he goes along. This is how he wrote both of his two best selling books—Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope—staying up after Michelle and his two young daughters had long gone to bed, reveling in the late night quiet… “When you’re working with Senator Obama the main player on a speech is Senator Obama,” Axelrod said. “He is the best speechwriter in the group and he knows what he wants to say and he generally says it better than anybody else would.”

Recu, lets get one thing straight. There was a time when I would have voted Jerry Garcia into the White House. Trust me, I’m not a “good OPer.” Many of my views on social issues would make most repubs. cringe. But I am strongly conservative when it comes to fiscal responsibility, which Bush has really been extremely disappointing or has even failed miserably at.

I support full public funding of campaigns, within reason.

Fly. I understand your concern. That’s the traditional hard liberal stance that Obama is perceived as on Fox and all the other stations (and probably from your friends).

He’s actually quite a free trader (for a liberal). He had to disguise it a bit I think in the primaries but, from reading his books, speeches, and past legislation, you’ll get a real sense of a free trader. Most likely not to your satisfaction. But not to what is caricatured as a liberal.

Auston Goolsbee has his ear as do a few others I can’t remember at the moment. I’m an idiot when it comes to the market (I’m read your blog to learn) so I can’t argue any solid points, but I do get a real sense that he’s a free trader (although I’m sure Kudlow would disapprove haha).

Fly, agreed. The other problem with the Palin nomination is it exposes McCain as a hypocrite. He has consistently criticized Obama for not having the experience to be president. Fine by me. Then, he nominates Palin, who also holds a razor-thin resumé. Clearly, McCain picked Palin solely as a campaign tool to energize the base (rather than to pick some old guy like Pawlenty who is credible and suitable, but old, white, and, well, boring). No questions there. But given McCain’s health complications in recent years and his age, the prospect of a potential Palin presidency is very real.

In a nutshell, McCain nominated someone he knows not to be ready for the White House (much as he feels about Obama), but who he feels can be instrumental to his election even if there’s a risk he could croak on year one and the American public would be left holding the bag on Palin. Gotta love politicians.

Also, Shedder. Why do you like Palin? She raised taxes as mayor. She’s done some symbolic things as governor(like sell the plane) but she was for the ‘bridge to nowhere’ before she was against it. She had a lobbying firm get her $20mil for her town of 6500. She had earmarks that McCain put on his ‘excessive earmark’ list.

I like her story and family and all that. She’s a likable person. I’m wondering about policy that doesn’t involve social issues.

Lest we forget, before becoming prime minister, Margaret Thatcher was the Secretary of Education in GB, with no foreign policy experience. As prime minister, she ended up being instrumental in the collapse of the Soviet Union.

It comes down to leadership, character, resolve, and a willingness to put the needs of others before yourself. When you have that going for you, you can effectively face a lot of challenges and overcome them.

All due respect to your thoughtful thoughts, but the race is not Palin vs. the Community Organizer, but McCain v Obama.

Palin sketched out the two broad strokes — raising taxes ACROSS THE BOARD in a bad economy and ZERO EXPERIENCE. THat’s what she was supposed to do. Obama’s speech was similar in that it was equally zilchoid on the specifics (not good to mention tax increases in national speech after all).

McCain will talk specifics because, like Biden he’s the “experience” part of this ticket, and not the “glamor.”

It’s a shame that the roles are reversed on the Dem side, and that, rather than point this out, everyone is supposed to ooh and ahh and admire the Candidate’s Beautiful New Clothes.

Dipshit, how many GOVERNORS have “foreign policy experience?” Given that Palin actually has to deal with Canada and Russia, she’s probably in the top percentile.

Obama writes his own speeches. Yes he has a writer to help but he basically writes them himself. So it’s not all the same.

    Bullshit.

What do you want to know about Obama’s community organizing. They were disparaging ALL community organizers. Those are people that work for little or nothing to help people in need. Real nice. Not gonna go over well.

Sure, great people like Al Sharpton who push for communism and rail against anyone redeveloping the shit sections of a city because it might eat into their political power. WHat a bunch of fucking saints. Not to mention that what Guiliana said last night was true, that the big “CHANGE” man’s first step into the political world was to run up and suckle on the corrupt bloated breast of the CHICAGO DEMOCRATIC MACHINE.

Yeah, a real “agent of change” in his community — keep those ballot boxes stuffed and those people in their place!

Can anyone deny the RENAISSANCE in Obama’s district? BwaaH!

It’s about feminism because anytime anybody asks about her resume or credentials they come back with “would you ask that to a man?”. And the answer to that is, she would not be on the ticket if she were a man.

Again this goatfucker steps into it like he’s my own personal “Slappy the Straight Man.”

Hey McFly, let me ask you a “reality based” question… Do you really think your COMMUNITY ORGANIZER would’ve been anywhere near this election if he wasn’t dreamy and black?

Ok guys here you go. Instead of arguing politics just do the math on the electoral map. 270 to win – currently 207 to Obama, 174 to McCain. I’ve mapped a scenario where we get a tie. PA, MI, MN, NH, NV and NM to Obama. FL, OH, NC, VA, MO and CO to McCain. A 269 tie.

Jake, I’ll assume you voted for Bush, twice. A man who promised to shrink government, has presided over the current crony bailout socialism and a dollar collapse, which effectively has increased the tax rate on anyone in this country.

Our remaining choices do not include Ron Paul, if you hadn’t noticed.

Apply your own logic to your own self before you go throwing stones in glass houses.

I’m a college student and either way, my social security is as good as gone. I believe it is being remitted back to Russia in order to pay off Fannie and Freddie paper as we speak.

    NEW FLY RULES!!!!!!!!!

    No politics during trading hours.

No name calling, when debating politics. If you are unable to debate with reason, backed with facts or opinions, then you have no business debating in the first place. Plus, name calling is my job.

I will allow political blogs after hours, which is a big shift for me. Seeing how many of you are interested in the Olympics, I mean elections, I will allow some discourse.

However, do it after hours—hat lovers.

Jake: Father forgive me, I have broken a commandment and am ashamed.

Priest: Jake, my son, what is the nature of your infraction with our Lord?

Jake: Father, I covet McCain’s VP candidate Sarah Palin in my thoughts and dreams.

Priest: Jake my son, say 10 Hail Mary’s, deposit $100 in the sinners box and refrain from political posting at IBC!

it’s too bad that even Ron Paul who everyone thinks is independent of the system, is secretly working for the same underground illuminatis propagandus that everyone else is, whether he knows it or not. He’s the candidate just around to give people hope, and make them think that it still is a democracy, and the system can be beaten.
Obama, Franken, and semi celebrity people running for power are no different, except that their “hope” message is designed to conveigh a message of hope to change the party, rather than to change a part of the system. Then there’s guys like Ventura that will come and give people hope that they can tear down what is perceived as the “whole system”.
Anything that happens in national news is all by design.
