On the Important Matter of the New York Football Giants

Jake

It’s the beginning of the glorious football season — the greatest game played in America by a huge margin…

And I don’t want to hear any whining, baseball freaks. Your sport is for fat people who spit for a higher percentage of the game than they engage in any aerobic activity. Sure, baseball pitchers certainly exert themselves for a couple of innings a game, but in recompense they get the next four or five days off. Give me a break. Soon your game will be eclipsed by lacrosse, a version of football played with sticks.

Where was I? Oh yeah, the beginning of the glorious football season. What is the essence of great football? I proffer it is a great running game and a great defense. For all my life, the New York Football Giants have only been good when they’ve combined these two factors, both in my teen and college years when they won their first two Superbowls, and more recently in 2008, when they won their third.

With 6’4″ 265 lb RB  Brandon Jacobs as our Killdozer , and the midget cannonball Ahmad Bradshaw as our speedy second running back (not to mention the utility man Danny Ware to fill in for both), I think we have the excellent running game covered for yet another year.   A very workman-like run-oriented offensive line aslo does great work in the trenches for this aspect of our game.

I think this strong running attack will also make up for our weaknesses in the passing game with the recent loss of leg shooting idiot WR, Plaxico Burress.  Who knows?  This may be the year that WR Sinorice “Licorice” Moss finally breaks out and fulfills the promise of his Miami University WR days.   Same goes with Mario Manningham (of Michigan fame) and rookie first round draft pick WR,  Hakeem Nicks.

The real question this year will be the usually solid Giants defense.   First, our great defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnulo, whom the Giants paid a head coaching salary ($3 million) last year just so he’d stay, is finally gone, to the St. Louis Rams as their new head coach.  Our new guy is the former linebacker’s coach under Spags, Bill Sheridan.  He knows Spags system, so let’s hope we do not miss a step here in the coaching department.  Still, it’s hard to lose such a beloved charismatic coach, and the Giants are known for letting great defensive coordinators go on to glory — from Tom Landry to Bill Bellichek to John Fox, and of course, combined dee coordinator and head coach, Bill Parcells.  I hated to lose Spags, no matter the consequences.   I’m confident he’ll be successful.

I think our defensive line–with stars such as Osi Uminora, Justin Tuck, and  Mathias Kiwanuka on the ends, and Barry Cofield, Fred Robbins, and Chris Canty playing tackle– will be solid.  Same goes with our secondary led by CB’s Corey Webster and Aaron Ross, and hit machine strong safety Kenny Phillips.

No, if we’re going to have problems, it will be in our soft linebacking corps.  I am loathe to say it, but the the team that spawned the all time greatest linebacker, Lawrence Taylor, not to mention Hall of Famer’s Harry Carson and Sam Huff, is really hurting for quality linebackers these days.   Here’s hoping second round draft pick Clint Sintim can step in soon, because I’m not feeling good about aging jorneyman Danny Clark and gun-shot abettor Antonio Pierce with perennial over-achiever and bench warmer Chase Blackburn completing our starting trio.   That screams lack of depth.

In any case, I love my Giants, flaws and all.   I expect their stock to rise in Jacksonian fashion, for they are, in tradition and legacy, the NFL’s gold standard.  Let the game’s begin.

The Crackboys will always suck, no matter how much lithium they infuse Tony Homo with to calm his jangly nerves.

Wait til they have to play a good team.

Ugh. Can’t believe they let the punter score on that miserable field goal fake.

Embarrassing, but definitely a “first game” fake that would be hard to get later in the season.

Didn’t Ware go out with a separated elbow?

And since when has Chris Canty been a player? He was tabbed a wasted pick by the Pats, undersized and incapable of making the transition from college to pros. He’s a player now since he joined the Giants??? Guess I lost track of his soaring career along the way ….

Meanwhile, Brady’s back and so is Monday Night Football!

Yeah, Ware is hurt and Hakeem Nicks, our #1 draft choice, looks like a busted ankle.

Canty had three sacks and 37 tackles as an end for the Crackboys last year, and the Giants paid him some nice dollah to come over (42 mill over six years) so they must think he’s good now…

Here’s the article about Canty getting signed by the Giants.

Different guy … Patriots pick in 1997 was a cornerback:

        > Canty was drafted 29th overall in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Over four NFL seasons, he played for the Patriots as well as the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks. In 58 career games for those three teams, he had four interceptions and 126 tackles. <

Last I heard he was in ALF … so that explains it.

Hmmm ….. The Undertaker …. Kraut too

He went on to play for the Las Vegas Gladiators and currently plays for the Rio Grande Valley Dorados of af2.

Not on the 2009 roster though … wonder if they’re related? Hope not for the Giants sake!

lol, that’s hilarious. I remember when this Chris Canty played for the Seahawks and he was beyond atrocious. And that’s saying something, because our secondary has never been exceptional.

Monday Night Football, here we go!!!

                Are the Shehawks playing tonight?

I thought it was SD and Br-Oakland.

No, the ‘hawks played yesterday and easily beat the Lambs, for whatever that may be worth.

I’m a fan overall of MNF, thus that excitement – even without Al Michaels and his calls of “deepest penetrations of the day”. Cue ChuckB!

RBC gave us a gift on their CDE downgrade today. If we get to 18.50 and bounce, that would be opportune.

If you get a chance check out Midway Gold (MDW). The chart is beautiful with a high tight flag, and the 20 day SMA just crossed over the 50 on the weekly and daily. Barrack Gold owns 14 +% of their stock. And they have major gold in the ground.

I bought in this morning at .84 and I still own shares from way back. It was up today, even though a lot of the PM’s were down.

I’m a little leary of those sub $1 stocks. I find they are often more trouble than they are worth. Even on junior golds, I’d like to see close to $2 to start moving in.

That’s all from past experience. Gold is manipulated to begin with, you don’t need adverse penny risk on top of everything else.

That said, I remember buying WHT (Wheaton Gold, before they merged w. GG) at under a buck, and that’s worked out fine.

Posted on Tim Knight’s blog, but “awaiting moderation” last I looked:

Speaking of slick talkers who have led investors to their doom, I was appalled to see the really childish shot you took at our site this weekend Tim. And what’s with “I won’t say their name, but I will waste an entire post disparaging them whilst inflating myself.” ?

Couple of things. One, when I was a more regular poster on this blog before I found iBC, I remember we used to remark that the time to short was when your attendance was DOWN not up. Remember that?

Have things changed? Seriously, it doesn’t seem so to me. You still strike me as a permabear, no matter what state the markets are in, and your attendance is still a great tell on where the markets might turn.

Secondly, why take a shot at Fly? His stuff is pure schtick, and what’s more, he’s making people money. He’s been bearish when it was warranted (admittedly, Woodshedder and I beat him to it in late 2007, but he climbed on by January of ’08) and it even took him a bit longer to shake the bearish bias. Sure, he’s a more scatological and younger oriented site, but does equate with some sort of harm to his investor base?

You, on the other hand, have served — like the other Lemming Leader — as a pier for fellow think alikes with whom to hold hands while your balances sink below the waves. And listen — we don’t “hate” you for that, but it sure does take some balls to crow about gaining a following for being wrong all the time.

And yes, you will be right eventually, just like you were back in the fall of 2007, but “right” in this game is a question of timing, not just economics.

One last thought — Fly ran an awesome screen on the PPT today that yanked high growth “hybrids” (a technical evaluation unique to the site itself) and there were about 25 – 30 names on it. Want to guess what the highest scoring name was?

NITE — Knight Securities. Now if that isn’t a sign from God…. lol!

You know I wish you the best, Tim, even if you are somewhat nuts. Best to all — Jake.
