The HawaiiTrader Survives 2 Foot Waves

I literally have cases of cases of water left over.  And a ton of batteries.  I’m thinking of having a giant block party.   Thanks for all your concern!

Water receding, well sort of…

Everyong got up at 530 am from the sirens.  So what do we do?  Well, since we live on an island, I guess we have to get… gas?  I said screw this line.tsunami-gasline

The collective IQ of the tourist in Hawaii is a possilbe 135…tsuanmi-watchers

As far as I can see, Tsunami warnings is great for business.  These lines were insane.  Never again.  I’m stocking up on a year supply of Spam….

Amazing how few people stock stuff for these types of things, eh? Mad dash at the end.

A little ‘grasshopper and the ant’ gig going on.

After filling the cooler with diet rite, beer and salami, we ended up on higher ground at the Hilo mall, where we had planned to shop for an upcoming vacation anyway.

Because I had previously filled the tank, we didn’t have to worry about gas. And while the dogs waited in the car ( we left the cats, figuring they could climb up on the house if need be), we shopped for the clothes we need for our cruise.

What was unreal was that there was no one in the stores or the mall. It sort of looked like a ghost town.
In any case, we had the complete attention of almost every clerk in every store.

Finally, the all clear was sounded and we drove back to our coastal home.

So as it turned out, we did exactly what we had planned to do yesterday, with the exception of filling the cooler and taking the dogs for a ride.

I’m glad the islands were spared. I went through Hurricane Andrew in Miami and that was no fun.

The bummer was that the waves on both the South and North Shores were pretty good. By the time the “all clear” was given, I was too tired and took a siesta. My friends said I missed some fun surf.

Oh well. It was good practice for Hawaii for the inevitable real disaster that will come one day. If a hurricane makes any kind of direct hit on Oahu, 70 percent of the homes here will be toast. All the older ones are single wall construction, and few people that I know have installed hurricane clips. Rolling the dice.

Fuckers in Hawaii sure do love Spam, don’t they? They eat the living shit out of it. Hey Gio, what’s the big attraction there?

I think there’s some history behind it — a lot of it was brought in during WWII, and so people became accustomed to eating it.

But rice is a staple here, way more than potatoes or pasta. . . and Spam = cheap salty meat —-> goes good with rice.

We usually eat it “cooked” (i.e., fried). A lot of times we’ll fry it with a little shoyu/sugar (think “teriyaki”) to give it a little sweetness, put a slice on top of a rice “ball” (actually shaped like a rectangle to fit the spam piece, and wrap it in “nori” (dried seaweed) (think “sushi”). You oughtta try it.

I just saw “Spam-flavored” macademia nuts at the store the other week.
