Welcome to Veritas5’s new blog, Dr. ‘Cane, Wishcasting Death to Oil Rigs Since 1924. I am finally shedding my erstwhile alias and embracing the PhD. Now fully qualified to do so, I will be discussing this year’s hurricane season, as well as other meteorological phenomena, and the investment opportunities they provide. Posts will include forecasting and perspective, stock picks and analysis, discussions of global warming and other climate issues, and the interplay between all three. Despite the title of the blog, you will find no wishcasting or cheerleading here, merely the application of hard meteorological logic and analysis as a means to bank coin. That being said, them rigs be going down.

For a discussion of the 2009 Hurricane Outlook, please see my post last week in the PG.
The tropics remain quiet, as is normal for the first week of July. My first full post will be up Sunday morning. Until then, have a fantastic Fourth of July. According to the Crop Moisture Index (a short-term drought indicator) shown below, most areas can be pretty liberal with fireworks this year without worrying about burning down the neighborhood. Exceptions include south Texas and most of the southwest, which are under excessive to severe drought. Careful with the sparklers, bottle rockets, and homemade guided missiles in these areas.
Figure 1: Crop moisture index for last week.
Note: Major Karma points for the first person to correctly identify the hurricane shown at the top.

WoohOOO…Welcome Back Veritas!
Ivan
Thanks Shed. Good to be back.
Goldie, good guess. Ivan was in the same area at roughly the same strength, but it was experiencing a small amount of southwesterly shear that gave it more of a lop-sided appearance as it emerged into the Gulf, compared to this very symmetric storm.
WILMA!!!!!!!!
Rita – The 3rd homo-cat5-hurricane-hammer of 2005.
YES! Good to have you on board Veritas. Just let me know when I need to evacuate.
Yes, RC and any other iBC-types down South need a direct line to/from Dr. Cane.
Cool….
Hey, we can give iBC live web cam of any blows that pass through SoFL (until AT&T digs up their own main cable, like they did in the last ground zero crossovers..). Sister-in-law also works for Shell BP, around Cajun’s area, and is in charge of some rigs. Let me know if you need any info from her about the rig status or whatever. The downside of that is that I had to alert sister-in-law to Katrina when she was rounding the straits heading to LA…she’s not too proactive up there…
Nicely done, DPeezy. Rita it is. Damn, only took three tries. I’ll have to make this harder.
It’s ’cause I gotz mad internet search skillz.
True story: I once finished 2nd in the entire state of Washington in a ‘search the Internet’ competition. 1st place must have been a pre-production Google bot prototype.
Damn, I had the right pic, but the site has it listed as Wilma. I coulda used those karma points.

Depeezy, nice. But I have an extensive archive of screenshots I’ve taken from hurricanes in the past that will be used in the future.
Fred, I see what you mean on the website. Wilma wasn’t this organized at that point in its life as it had recently moved off the Yucatan Peninsula and had weakened due to its interaction with land, while Rita was cruising over a warm eddy in the loop current. Wilma also had a much larger eye.
Looking forward to the challenge.
Perhaps at the end, the overall leader can win a bag of peanuts, or a can of corn, or some such.
Welcome Veritas aka DR. CANE
Anyone interested in natural gas or oil should check out the data presented by Dr. ‘Cain. I banked some nice coin during last years hurricane season, on info I got through his postings (as Veritas5).
Glad to see you tabbed by the Fly, Dr, ‘Cane. You certainly earned it.
Niiiiiiice!!
Veritas aka Dr. Cane…. This is solid 😉
Sup homie
The ladies know him as Dr. Love.
FYI
Dr. ‘Cane has been hired to blog for the hurricane season only.
Welcome aboard! Looking forward to learning a little bit about hurricanes.
Great stuff, I like this guy already….Next jerk that tells me $UNG is doomed will get a finger poke in the eye.
Welcome back, felicidades on your sheepskin and bring on the reports!
Even as it appears I’ll be leaving the northern tip of hurricane alley (aka Nova Scotia) it’s nice to watch Mother Nature put mankind in it’s place.
Welcome,
As a gulf coaster, I look forward to seeing your stuff. I look forward to comparing hurricane forecasts, analyses, etc.
By the way, LOVE the Dr. Cane title bar/pic, whatever the heck it is called.
