One of a kind…

A one-of-a-kind, pristine-condition 1873 dime fetched $1.84 million in an auction Thursday night at the American Numismatic Association convention at the Convention Center.

“It’s not rare, it’s not scarce – it’s unique. And it’s pretty much immaculate,” said Brian Kendrella, director of operations at the Spectrum Group. He entered the winning bid on behalf of a private collector who sought to remain anonymous.

Before the live auction began, online bids had already reached $950,000. The price went up in seconds, with bidders in the room, on the phone, and online answering the auctioneer’s calls – $1 million, $1.1 million, $1.2 million, $1.3 million, $1.4 million, $1.5 million. The winning bid was $1.6 million, plus a 15 percent buyer’s fee.

0BAMA is a clown…

PUEBLO, Colo. – President Obama, while villifying Mitt Romney for opposing the auto industry bailout, bragged about the success of his decision to provide government assistance and said he now wants to see every manufacturing industry come roaring back.

“I said, I believe in American workers, I believe in this this American industry, and now the American auto industry has come roaring back,” he said. “Now I want to do the same thing with manufacturing jobs, not just in the auto industry, but in every industry.

“I don’t want those jobs taking root in places like China, I want those jobs taking root in places like Pueblo,” Obama told a crowd gathered for a campaign rally at the Palace of Agriculture at the Colorado State Fairgrounds here.

GS and GE employees are being very devious…and I like it.

Four years ago, employees of New York-based Goldman gave three-fourths of their campaign donations to Democratic candidates and committees, including presidential nominee Barack Obama. This time, they’re showering 70 percent of their contributions on Republicans.

That’s the biggest switch among the 25 companies whose employees have given the most to candidates and parties since 1989, according to data through June 30 compiled by Bloomberg from the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based research group that tracks campaign donations. Goldman isn’t alone; 13 of the companies’ employees are now giving more to Republicans after backing Democrats four years ago.

“A switch in party preference of this magnitude is virtually unheard of among major companies with an established presence in Washington,” said Rogan Kersh, provost at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Employees of General Electric Co. (GE) are giving 63 percent of their contributions to Republicans this year, almost a mirror image of their distribution in 2008 when Democrats received 66 percent of their donations.

“GE employees contribute personal funds to any candidate they choose,” said Lindsay Lorraine, a company spokeswoman
