It’s not a virus. It’s a bacteria.
Literally the first thought I had when I hit “stop stream”…
‘Did I say virus?”
It’s just that I know a few germaphobes who would squeeze their eyes shut and cover their noses and mouths if they heard the bugs being mentioned interchangeably within a discussion. FYI, Hepatitis is viral, Yellow Fever causes 30,000 deaths every year and Ebola hasn’t cause that many deaths since it was first identified. You gotta love CNN – – not.
Perhaps it is not possible to serve fresh sourced near-organic food on this scale, at this price point.
The mass consumer is cheap, and rarely considers the ongoing reduction in purchasing power of the dollar. They don’t recognize the cost of people who will instinctively practice safe food handling and preparation. i.e. the masses don’t get the connection between shopping at Walmart and living on minimum wage
15 years ago I lived in a major city. Several local non-chain places had good quality take out at about $ 20 for an entree and piece of pie for dessert. If I went back to visit, and the price was NOT $ 35 for the same thing, I would not buy the food. No way the quality and safety could be the same.
Thanks for the insight. That’s going to be the biggest problem for the brand going forward. We may have seen peak organic.
I’m a fan, even here in NYC where the burrito has run from $7.50 to $10.00 in the last few years. But alot of regulars I spoke to are just taking a break from it ,due to the scare and prices. Like homey mx2101 says the scale is alot to cover! I mean I’d rather go to Rockys Crown Pub and eat 2 burgers and a beer for $20 than go down the block anywhere else and get sick, just not worth the headache. Overreacting? Hmm maybe a little but nobody wants to jump in head first into a virus…..umm no I mean bacteria!
You could be exposed to both. Sorry, gallows humor. My advice, go for anything cooked over anything raw and possibly not washed properly before prep.
One last thought on the idea, unless you beg for more, remember the unbelievable tragedy of 33 people who died from listeria poisoning via cantaloupe traced to a single grower.
A family farm. All around a tragedy. I can’t imagine being the farmers. http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/food-poisoning/20130905/lessons-learned-from-cantaloupe-listeria-outbreak?page=1
