Gloria in Excelsis Jackson

Jackson

Again, there’s no need for braggadocio.  It’s too early yet.

Let’s just recognize that there will be pullbacks, perhaps as soon as this week.   Those pullbacks may take the form of consolidations, or real live gut-rippers like we experienced in rocket ship IAMGOLD Corporation (USA) [[IAG]] last Friday.   Take a look at my notes on the Jacksons for further guidance.

Important to note, however, that we’ve broken out of the long term triangle on the $HUI, and out of the recent June highs, with a close over $409 on Friday.   Next targets are $475 and the old highs of $525.   I am firmly convinced we’ll see both those levels well before Christmas.  This should drive the Jacksons for the remainder of the year, and I think there’s ample room for continued participation here.

Remember this chart from a couple of days back?

hui_daily

Well, look where we’ve come in two short weeks:

hui_daily1

My favourite (sic) non-Jacksons include Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]] , Rubicon Minerals Corp. (USA) [[RBY]]  and Golden Star Resources Ltd. (USA) [[GSS]] on the gold side and [[CDE]] and [[EXK]] on the silver.   I really like the free air on the CDE side.   It could go to the low forties with very little resistance now that it’s broken out of it’s May closing highs.

Here’s the weekly Jackson review… note the monthly is higher than the weekly in this first week of September, because August 31’st was such a down day for many Jacksons.

Just a Faithful Reminder… The “O.J.”

Jeff

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
Thomas Jefferson, – “O.J.” — the Original Jackson (Attributed)
3rd president of US (1743 – 1826)

______________________________________________

With this quote in mind, I want to again call to your attention that we are approaching the “August to Christmas” gold run, which generally includes a concurrent run in the gold and silver miners, as represented by the [[HUI]] index.   Almost every year in the oughts since 2000 has reflected this run, save of course last year, when we experienced a 28% loss due to a mass liquidation of all assets.

As reflected in the 2007 portion of the following chart, you can see the $HUI broke over 67% in the August to December period.   Note that a return to the old highs ($525) would only require a 44% run from these levels.

I believe we should see a relatively rapid progression when this thing gets moving — from $375 to the June highs (about $405) and then very possibly back to our pre-crash ’08 old highs in the $525 area.  That kind of progression in the $HUI should mean good things for all of our precious Jacksons, including Eldorado Gold Corporation (USA) [[EGO]] ,IAMGOLD Corporation (USA) [[IAG]] , our leveraged royalty play in Royal Gold, Inc. [[RGLD]] and our gold ETF [[GDX]] whose $34 strike options I purchased last week for September expiry.

A strong $HUI will mean even better things for the silver Jacksons, as the price of gold is still well over the historic 40x silver “norm” at nearly 65x today.   Silver Wheaton Corp. (USA) [[SLW]] is my number one pick in this space, but  [[PAAS]] and even relative laggard Silver Standard Resources Inc. (USA) [[SSRI]] should be strong in this coming period.

As for non-Jacksons, I still like Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]] despite the recent dilution, and Rubicon Minerals Corp. (USA) [[RBY]] , Golden Star Resources Ltd. (USA) [[GSS]] and [[BAA]] all look good from the junior gold side, and of course [[EXK]]   and [[CDE]] on the silver side.   I will also throw Hecla Mining Company [[HL]] out as a possibility because it tends to jump in “hot” precious markets.   Be warned, however, this last is a “trade only” position, and not one to keep even one day past its expiration date.

If you want to buy and hold, stick with the Jacksons and a well diversified pool of juniors… one or two of those will be “lotto tickets” and the rest will be largely crap, but you will be happy for the lotto wins nonetheless.

No excuses, ladies and gents.  It’s “sarious” (sic) time.  See you at the finish line.

I know I haven’t given you a Jacksonian update in a while, so here’s last week’s results.  Note the bludgeoning in Thompson Creek Metals Company, Inc. [[TC]] due to the UBS (curse them) “bought deal” which means a “sold short” deal to those who are already holders.  No matter, once this overhead is sopped up, TC will move again, as will Teck Cominco Limited (USA) [[TCK]] .  Get these while they are cheap.

The General Still Riding High

jackson horsed

Not to get overly full of it (hah! me?), but the Jacksons are close to annual highs again.   What’s interesting is that most of the recent runup last week occurred on Friday, when the dollar took a significant downturn.   Now whether or not this is going to be a headfake or not should be apparent very quickly, I believe.

The only thing that gives me some pause is the [[TLT]] runup here.  I just can’t believe that lower discount won’t get a snapback here soon, and with it another pullback in the market.  Right now I continue to believe the  [[UUP]] will continue to weaken and $USD will head to its lows of $71 again.

No need to mention, if the dollar does continue it’s retrace to the lows, the Jacksons and the other precious metals will continue to soar here.  As usual, I like the silvers, but of the non-Jacksons, Golden Star Resources Ltd. (USA) [[GSS]] is the “most ready,” and Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]] , [[BAA]] , and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (USA) [[IVN]] look tastiest on the gold junior side.

Happy hunting this week.

Thar’s Gold in Them Thar Hills!

YukonBumble

Dang, I should be out of the office more often. Looks like the “Dollah Dollah Bill Y’awl” prediction  I made yesterday is staying true and we are continuing to see a break down in the much beknighted green back– [[UUP]] .

The dollar’s breakdown is causing a “so sorry” event for bears, but a “yippe kai yi yeah, muthaflickah” event for those of us in the precious metal camp. What’s ironic is that the bears are correct — the only thing keeping this market going right now is the craptastic dollar. In other words, it’s not “real” value but “inflated value” that’s driving stocks upward. What is doubly ironic is that bears will short this market thinking that the dollar will strengthen.

Very odd.

We’re here to make money so let me throw out some picks that are looking good. First — the junior golds, which on the Jackson side include only Eldorado Gold Corporation (USA) [[EGO]] , which is my strongest Jackson today. Non Jacksonian juniors I like, and will mention again are Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]] (which is breaking out as I type this), Golden Star Resources Ltd. (USA) [[GSS]] , [[BAA]] , NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) [[NG]] and Northgate Minerals Corporation (USA) [[NXG]] on the gold side and Silver Wheaton Corp. (USA) [[CDE]] and [[EXK]] on the silver side. I also like the double silver ETF [[AGQ]] here as well.    Finally, the Jackson silvers are looking strong here as well — Silver Standard Resources Inc. (USA) [[SSRI]] , [[PAAS]] and [[SLW]].

Non-PM Jacksons Teck Cominco Limited (USA) [[TCK]] and Thompson Creek Metals Company, Inc. [[TC]] continue to look great while agro man The Andersons, Inc. [[ANDE]] takes a breather.   Still a buy as well, though.

From a non-Jackson picks side, [[BIOS]] is getting knocked back today, but it’s still on trend by a long piece, so look to add. Also , the rockets I gave you the other day — Trimble Navigation Limited [[TRMB]] and Given Imaging Ltd. [[GIVN]] , are flagging here and if they begin to take off from the bottom of these flags (instead of breaking down), they too could be a nice purchase here. Use caution and mind your sizing with these big movers. Best to you all, and look to the PM’s if the dollar continues to deteriorate.

UPDATE:  I almost forgot to throw something in on Rage’s regional banks  play.  Of those I like Fifth Third Bancorp [[FITB]] and KeyCorp [[KEY]] .  Somewhat  related — I also like the Irish shilelegh-wielding banks too — Bank of Ireland (ADR) [[IRE]] and Allied Irish Banks, plc. (ADR) [[AIB]] .

Jackson in Elysium

Elysium Bull
This is a far shortened version of the post I wrote last night that got eaten by WordPress, curse their bones. Apparently, not even the autosave was working last night.

In summary, yesterday was a bag full of fruity jelly beans and bottle rockets. The three I told you to watch — Thompson Creek Metals Company, Inc. [[TC]] , Teck Cominco Limited (USA) [[TCK]] and [[TBT]] were up some 8+%, 7+% and 5+%. They are still all buys here.

The silvers shocked me, many of them heading back over all the moving averages they had fallen below. But then silver always makes violent moves — it’s the Al Capone of the precious metal world. The silver Jacksons did well, with Silver Wheaton Corp. (USA) [[SLW]] — my favourite (sic) — doing the best at over 6% up, but in the personal holdings, non-Jackson junior [[EXK]] was the superstar, up over 14.2%.

I expect all the metals to have pullbacks today after yesterday, but I don’t think this was a headfake, either. I think the inflation numbers are starting to percolate. Remain cautious, but be sure to continue accumulating and filling out your well diversified list of juniors. These are lotto tickets (witness [[BAA]] as of late) and you just never know when they will come in. Another great example is Golden Star Resources Ltd. (USA) [[GSS]] , hat tip to whomever reminded me of them again yesterday.

Gun to my head picks today include Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]], [[BAA]]  and more Thompson Creek Metals Company, Inc. [[TC]] . I will seek to start getting rid of my [[TZA]] today as well on any strength. Cash is starting to slow down the portfolio performance, as you can note from the relative performance numbers below. Have a great day.
