In reality, I could have titled this piece any number of things, including, “All Hail the PetroGods,” “Bow to Finances,” “Werewolves Soundly Defeated,” or just a good, old-fashioned, “Fuck You Bears.” However, I picked what I did because, quite simply, smoking is as American as apple pie.
Really, I get why everyone flips there fucking lids when the subject comes up. Tobacco usage is unhealthy when practiced habitually and cigarettes are packed full of toxins that really shouldn’t be brought into contact with any living thing.
However, that’s not going to stop me from running around advertising on behalf of the smoking industry, in a very free, unfunded manner, because, to be blunt; fuck the anti-smoking campaigns. Really, by not smoking you’re directly telling these shit heads, “Hey, look, I’m a success story so you keep doing what you’re doing.”
Nothing pisses me off more than those shitty, anti-smoking commercials. Do you hear me? There is nothing. And the men and women behind the anti-smoking campaign are some of the most annoying, pushy, prying cocksuckers the world has ever known.
Also, the smoking of tobacco is as ancestral to our country as the very first peoples to live here. It predates turkey, mayflowers, and even, yes, baseball. To this day, the growing of tobacco is still conducted on some of the same plantations as were running before the very founding of our nation, all by well mannered, distinguished, southern gentlemen, of course.
If I have to choose between supporting some insufferable, meddlesome, northerner or west coast type, or a southern gentleman with enviable manners, I’m going to take the south, hands down.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still not going to start smoking. Personally, I think cigarettes taste terrible, being the low brow garbage marketed to the poor, as they are. But if you can’t afford cigars, (looking at you, bears), by all means, light up the calm, refreshing taste of a Marlboro.
Thus, I declare, with Altria (MO) firmly in the $19 range, the true winner of today’s hundred point plus move is tobacco.
In closing, if you think this post is odd and about nothing, you’re correct. I have nothing yet to write about because I’m still sitting on my hands. However, I may order to transact a short stake sometime tonight, or else reduce the margin position of my account. I will not be shorting anything tonight. It is a simple observation that crude has been leading the market throughout all of its ebbing and, presently, it looks like crude may be turning over. I’ll only be shorting if we make new highs in crude, or else if later a leg lower presents a new, easily distinguished peak.
Still considering letting some names go.
WFMI looks weak here, especially being an American company with rising commodity costs, weak dollar, and a generally considered weak consumer for higher cost organic goods. Support around $27 on the chart. Was weak on yesterday’s rally too.
Eventually people will be more comfortable holding MCD…. PG…XOM…MSFT….HP as to holding $$$.
Looks to me like were going up or out? So we march back up to 11,500 , 12,000 dow or we crash and its back to Guns Gardens and God trade. In my view even with all the pain in the market we never had the day where the red lights went off and people ran for the doors. I read accounts of a maintenance man working at the NYSE in 1929 describing the vibe on the floor…”It was like Lions Roaring”.
