Today, I had to hire a grass company to come mow my lawn. I only bring this up because I feel like I just lost a piece of my manhood. I remember growing up BAF, that’s broke as fuck for the ill informed, I couldn’t wait to own a home. I wanted to be that guy who would spend hours outside perfecting a perfect yard for my kids to play in. I wanted to pay attention to every detail, because in doing so, I would be reminded of every step I took to finally get here, home ownership– The American Dream.
It’s funny because after having a little bit of success, and owning a home for years, you take for granted the dream in which one initially had. You want more. It’s also funny, that as the years start to pass, details suddenly do not matter. You just want to get the job done (especially cutting grass in July & August in Louisiana).
For those following along, some know I have been struggling with nerve issues that stem from my C4 spine. One of the things that will aggravate the nerve is the vibration from the lawn mower, so the doctor says no grass cutting. Hence, the hiring of a lawn company.
A few things happened after the first cut today. The first initial thought was, “I cannot believe I just had to hire a company to cut the grass, there’s nothing like the smell of fresh grass on a spring day with a beer in my hand after a job well done.” The second thought was, “Damn! They did this shit better than me, it looks awesome, now I will sit in my favorite lawn chair and enjoy my beer.”
I thought, “Have I really made it?” Truth be told, had it not been for my nerve injury, I would never hire another man to cut my own grass, I guess it is/was pride speaking.
But, man I could get use to this.
I find myself happier now. With the time that was once used to cut the grass, I am now able to focus my energy on the small details again, like trimming the trees, replacing old fence boards, adding things to the garden with my wife. We both seem happier.
A funny thing happens in life, as your schedule fills up, you are concerned less and less with details.
However, details do matter. If you find yourself rushing to finish projects just to get them done, is there really happiness in the process? or, are you doing it because you have to?
As many of you traders out there fall into murder holes tomorrow morning, in efforts to build a quick empire, just be reminded of this quote, “You Can’t Rush Something You Want To Last Forever”.
Slow down and enjoy the process. Because, if you don’t, you may just have an injury to remind yourself to slow down.

we’ll almost certainly never meet, but as a long-time visitor/poster of this site and your posts, this one resonated with me for more reasons than i’ll ever articulate here. suffice it to say, we just hired a landscaping company to take care of the shit that i love to do, but takes away from the time i can/want to spend elsewhere. life, indeud, fills up your schedule with more important things.
Cheers my man! Thanks for the comment. Life has a funny way of working things out.
It’s important to delegate menial work to focus on the big things. I’ve never spent day cutting the grass. But I do love to garden, creating a vision for the overall yard.
I’ve also never programmed, but have delegated and created the worlds best financial analytics software.
indeud.
While I agree that focusing on the big things are important, I do find joy in being able to execute the micro-technical tasks required to get the big things done.
I’ve been grooming my own lawn for years; it never gets old.
The first few cuttings and trims will be fine and then things will deteriorate rapidly .
BINGO. i’ve had to switch both lawn companies and pest/fertilizer companies. Things started greated, then they killed my yard. The newest company brought it back to life, but now for the last 2 months i’ve been emailing the owner asking for updates on when he’s coming again because the yard is getting high. I had to break out my own lawn mower because i couldn’t wait any longer.
Elder Raul is the groundskeeper at Casa de Raul.
One of the few benefits here in California of having so many immigrants, legal and otherwise, is that everyone who is still middle or upper class has their yard work done by gardeners and their houses cleaned by the gardener’s wives.
Good for you. I finally did that about 4 years ago. I’m almost 72 now and was starting to get really tired of it as in dreading it as the time for cutting approached. Best thing I ever did. And they do a better job.
WTF Dicks now cutting grass? Its clearly fools week at IBC
