$TM Reports a Sales Increase of 28%

“TOKYO (AP) — Toyota sold 7.4 million vehicles around the world in the first nine months of the year, up 28 percent from a year earlier, but its strong growth faces headwinds from a sales plunge inChina that could unseat it as the world’s top automaker.

Anti-Japanese sentiment flared in China after Japan nationalized tiny islands in the East China Sea, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, intensifying a territorial dispute. The move set off violent protests in China and a widespread call to boycott Japanese goods. The islands are administered by Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan.

Toyota’s vehicle sales in China dropped to about half of last year’s levels in September to 44,100 vehicles from 86,000 the year before. In August, Toyota sold 75,280 vehicles in China, down 15 percent.

Toyota reclaimed its crown as the world’s top automaker from General Motors Co. in the first half, selling 4.97 million vehicles globally. That marked a turnaround Toyota, which had suffered setbacks in recent years from massive recalls and natural disasters.”

CEOs Ban Together to Persuade Congress to Act on Deficit

“Chief executives of more than 80 big-name U.S. corporations, from AetnaInc. AET +0.66% to Weyerhaeuser Co., WY -1.12% are banding together to pressure Congress to reduce the federal deficit with tax-revenue increases as well as spending cuts.

The CEOs, in a statement to be released on Thursday, say any fiscal plan “that can succeed both financially and politically” has to limit the growth of health-care spending, make Social Security solvent and “include comprehensive and pro-growth tax reform, which broadens the base, lowers rates, raises revenues and reduces the deficit.”

$AAPL Suffers a Minor Blow With Samsung From a Dutch Court Ruling

“Another loss for Apple in the courts: a Dutch court in the Hague has ruled Samsung does not infringe an Apple multitouch patent, Reuters is reporting. Apple had argued last month in the court that Samsung infringed its patent on multi-touch function, according to the news agency. “With these products Samsung does not infringe the claims that Apple has made,” the latest court ruling said.

In a statement commenting on the court ruling, Samsung said: “We welcome today’s ruling, which affirms our position that our products do not infringe Apple’s intellectual property. For decades, we have heavily invested in pioneering the development of technological and design innovations in the mobile industry, which have been constantly reflected in our products. We will continue to further develop and introduce products that enhance the lives of Dutch consumers.”

$EBAY and $FDX Team Up on Shipping to Compete Against $AMZN

EBay Inc. (EBAY), owner of the world’s largest online marketplace, is joining with FedEx Corp. (FDX) to offer shipping discounts and label printing as the company competes withAmazon.com Inc. (AMZN)’s vast delivery network.

EBay merchants will be able to print FedEx labels at home and ship at a discount of as much as 37 percent, said Carl Gish, EBay’s vice president of shipping. $AAPL to Release the Mini iPad Today

“SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Apple Inc is expected to make its biggest product move on Tuesday since debuting the iPad two years ago, launching a smaller, cheaper tablet into a market staked out by Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc.

Apple hopes to beat back their charge onto its home turf of consumer electronics hardware, while safeguarding its lead in the larger 10-inch tablet space that even deep-pocketed rivals like Samsung Electronics have found tough to penetrate.

Amazon’s Kindle and Google’s Nexus 7 have grabbed a chunk of the lower end of the tablet market and proved demand for a pocket-sized slate exists, helping force Apple into a space it has avoided and at times derided, analysts say.

A smaller tablet would mark the first device to be added to Apple’s compact portfolio under Chief Executive Tim Cook, who took over from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death.”
