Stay Out of Jail Today, Don’t Instagram Your Ballot

A not-so-surprising thing happened this morning: My Instagram feed morphed from photos of dogs, kids, fancy coffees and food porn into a stream of people’s voting ballots.

And it’s not just my feed: A search for “#vote” in Instagram’s Explore tab currently brings up more than 460,000 photo results. Not all of these hip pics are ballots, necessarily, but most are related to campaign and voting issues.

Instagram Rolls Out Web Profiles

The most striking thing about the new web profiles, which are being gradually rolled out to users, is its resemblance to Facebook Timeline. An animated, rotating mosaic of Instagram photos occupies about the same amount of space as Facebook Timeline’s Cover photo; a small profile image, short bio and follower stats are situated just beneath. Photo thumbnails are organized in reverse-chronological order further down the page; click on one, and it’ll appear at full size alongside likes and comments.

For the first time, users can like and leave comments on photos from the web, and follow new users as well.

Student stabbed 25 times in his sleep

A 19-year-old American student has regained consciousness on Friday after allegedly being stabbed by his best friend, who says he has no recollection of the events after a drug-fueled night of Halloween partying in Italy’s capital.

They are finding bodies left and right

It’s so bad here, a lot worse than how its being portrayed by the media. They are finding bodies left and right, elderly people who don’t even watch the news or who knew the storm was coming. I was just with one of my best friends from high school and college, and his house is completely gone. One story I heard was about this one guy who evacuated his house during Hurricane Irene but then it got looted. So when they told him to evacuate for Sandy, he said, ‘I’m not leaving.’ Now they can’t find him, his 13-year-old daughter is dead, and his wife is in critical condition at the hospital. These are the stories. My stepfather and my mother, I love them to death. But when they heard the storm was coming, they said, ‘It’s not going to be that bad. Irene didn’t do anything.’ They had two flashlights and a couple of scented candles. Little did they know. It’s just not worth it. If you’re told to evacuate, you need to get out.

‘IF POLICE WEREN’T HERE SOMEBODY WOULD BE DEAD

“If the police wasn’t here somebody would be dead,” she said, noting the desperation of people in the aftermath of Sandy. “People would be shooting.”

Michael Wasilewski, 48, of the Bronx, also drove around for two hours before coming across the Harlem gas station.

“I’ve been driving around for hours,” he said as he got $75 worth of gas just after midnight on Friday. He filled up his car, and also picked up some extra gas for his wife’s car.

“I’ve never been so happy in my life,” he said. “It’s the little things that you take for granted. My wife is a nurse, and I gotta take her to work in the morning.”

Livery cab driver Rich Loza, 33, was in line at W. 130th St. and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., but he decided he would take his chances elsewhere.

“It’s horrible,” the Bronx native said. “The city should have been ready for this.”
