Yale’s Shiller: World in a ‘Late Great Depression’

“The global economy is mired in a “late Great Depression” despite central bank stimulus policies, says Yale economist and author Robert Shiller.

“Our whole economy has been affected by variations in confidence. Central banks are sort of trusted, but the actions they have often affect people’s confidence by appearance rather than substance. We’re not in the most trusting mood now,” Shiller tells CNBC.

The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan and the Bank of England have propped up their respective economies via liquidity injections known as quantitative easing, tools designed to spur recovery but dubbed by critics as printing money out of thin air.

He says the world is in a “new age of austerity.”

Nokia, $NOK, To Sell Luxury Unit Vertu

“(Reuters) – Cellphone maker Nokia is in talks to sell its UK luxury subsidiary Vertu, which hand makes some of the world’s most expensive mobile phones, a source familiar with the company’s strategy said on Monday.

Earlier the Financial Times reported that talks with private equity group Permira were at an advanced stage on a possible sale which would raise about 200 million euros ($265 million)….”

S&P Downgrades 16 Spanish Banks

“Standard & Poor’s (S&P) Ratings Services announced on Monday that it had lowered the credit rating of 16 Spanish banks. The downgrade came ahead of an announcement of Spain’s first quarter GDP figures, which showed the country had fallen back into recession….”

Humana, $HUM, Posts a 21% Drop in Profits

“LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Humana Inc. said Monday that its first-quarter profit fell 21 percent as the health insurer paid out more in claims and bolstered spending in anticipation of growth in its lucrativeMedicare Advantage membership.

The Louisville-based company nudged up its earnings expectations for the full year to a range of $7.55 to $7.75 per share, up from its prior forecast of $7.50 to $7.70 per share.

But the first-quarter results and the increased forecast were short of Wall Street expectations. Its shares fell more than 2 percent in premarket trading….”

Hologic, $HOLX, to Buy GenProbe, $GPRO, for $3.72 Billion

“BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Medical device maker Hologic Inc. said Monday that it will buy diagnostic test maker Gen-Probe for about $3.72 billion in an all-cash deal.

Bedford, Mass.-based Hologic will pay $82.75 for each Gen-Probe share.

The price represents a 20 percent premium ….”

Energy Transfer Partners, $ETP, Will Buy Sunoco, $SUN, for $5.3 Billion

Energy Transfer Partners LP (ETP) agreed to buy Sunoco Inc. (SUN), a pipeline and gasoline station owner, for $5.3 billion in shares and cash to add oil terminals and transportation assets.

Energy Transfer, a Dallas-based natural-gas pipeline owner, will pay $25 in cash and 0.5245 shares for each Sunoco share, giving Sunoco investors $50.13 a share, according to a statement today. Energy Transfer is paying a 23 percent premium above the April 27 closing price for Sunoco. That’s less than the 48 percent average premium of 97 deals in the pipeline sector in North America in the past 12 months, according to data compiled by Bloomberg….”

Retail Sales Rise in Germany on Job Creation

“German retail sales rebounded in March as declining unemployment, slowing inflation and higher wages bolstered households’ purchasing power.

Sales, adjusted for inflation and seasonal swings, rose 0.8 percent from February, when they fell a revised 0.9 percent, the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden said today. Economists forecast a gain of 1 percent, the median of 26 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey showed. Sales increased 2.3 percent from a year earlier…”
