The reality is people over a certain age should not be operating things that require positive control, and could kill if it is lost. No doubt the old guy was very experienced and skilled, probably more so that the young pilots. But as one gets older there is increasing risk of dropping dead (or whatever) at any time. He may have had the flying completely under control, until his heart decided this is the time to quit.
