Amazon.com Inc has proposed a hiring spree of 7,000 jobs in California if state leaders put a recently enacted online sales tax on hold for two years.
The offer comes as California contends with the second-highest unemployment rate among U.S. states and broad anxiety about the national economy.
The tax, which took effect on July 1, requires retailers outside of California to collect sales taxes on online orders made through California-based affiliates. If it is not enforced until 2014, the largest Internet retailer also would drop its effort to put a measure to California voters that would repeal it.

I’m surprised they would be ok with it as long as its 2 years in the future? That seems like not a very good bargain at all, whether it’s this year, next year, or 5 years from now. What exactly is their angle on that?
Also wondering what are the 7,000 jobs?
A friend of mine (old Punk, Lebenskünstler), is now getting by on home office Amazon customer support.

He worked in an Amazon call center some years ago and says the pay for the home office job is lousy.
I think Amazon is taking advantage of the fact, that there are now many reasonably intelligent people for hire, who would do any job.
Maybe they think, that in two years the economy is better and the “homies” get themself a better job, so Amazon has to switch back to some offshore call-center-zombies anyway.
