I think this speaker might object to being called a hippie. He used to call in the National Guard to chase hippies around the UC Berkeley campus:

I transmit herewith the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The Convention was adopted by unanimous agreement of the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1984, and entered into force on June 26, 1987. The United States signed it on April 18, 1988. 1 also transmit, for the information of the Senate, the report of the Department of State on the Convention.

The United States participated actively and effectively in the negotiation of the Convention . It marks a significant step in the development during this century of international measures against torture and other inhuman treatment or punishment. Ratification of the Convention by the United States will clearly express United States opposition to torture, an abhorrent practice unfortunately still prevalent in the world today.

You’re saying Ronaldus Magnus would have eschewed waterboarding KSM, the most vile criminal this side of Chuck Manson, in order to thwart more 911-type terror attacks?

No. I’m saying that he asked the Senate to ratify a convention against torture in order to “demonstrate unequivocally our desire to bring an end to the abhorrent practice of torture.”

What he might have done regarding KSM is only speculation. One could speculate that he could have turned to those who note that information produced via torture is not reliable. People under torture readily lie, as KSM did.

    To quote another prominent Republican:
Ultimately, this is more than a utilitarian debate. This is a moral debate. It is about who we are.

I don’t mourn the loss of any terrorist’s life. What I do mourn is what we lose when by official policy or official neglect we confuse or encourage those who fight this war for us to forget that best sense of ourselves. Through the violence, chaos and heartache of war, through deprivation and cruelty and loss, we are always Americans, and different, stronger and better than those who would destroy us.

He and Dickless Cheney should be prosecuted for destruction of life (murder) and property.

Can you imagine some other country attacking the US on false evidence, of whatever?

    How wreckless can you be.

If they were thrown in jail, wars would not be waged so quickly.

But then again, no one is in jail for the 2008 financial crisis .. iow, white collar crime, pays .. and pays BIG. Unless you screw over other white collars; if you screw Blue collars or the unwashed masses, no problemo.

And Otts — Let’s not sugar coat history with a bunch of bullshit. The CIA has been doing black ops since inception, and every country has “secret warriors.” I like to think that for the most part they are dealing with extremely bad people like KSM, but…
