I Zold Nossing!

[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34ag4nkSh7Q&NR=1 450 300]

_____________________________

I had a Sargent Schulz moment this morning and, as a result, ended up selling “nossing.”

As you may recall, we opened kind of weak in the miners, and I decided to hold off til my usual 10-11 am period to dispose of some stocks.   But we began rallying shortly after the open and it looked like gold was trying to hang in there.  Generally, I would not recommend this line of indecision and I would enjoin you, rather,  to “follow your plan” at all times.

Sometime, however, my “gut” tells me that I should stay my hand.  Often times allowing for a little patience, and “not trading” instead of pro-actively trading, I’ve saved myself considerable heartache and regret.

That doesn’t mean I won’t be selling tomorrow, however, even as the dollar drop today tells me it will be difficult for gold and silver to break down any time soon.  What I may be doing instead is selling a portion of some of my fatter gold plays (and maybe some silver if we discontinue our current rebound) and investing in some “fast actin’ Tinactin” recovery stocks, like EEM, QLD, TNA and perhaps even some ERX (sorry Cain!).

I would be loathe to abandon the recovering baser metal plays as well in this snap-back, so I will be inspecting TC, TCK, TIE and even some AVL tomorrow.  Last, take a look at two good beat-downs for some fast flash action — CREE and PBR .  These are two of my old favourites which have fallen considerably OUT of favor.   They may be worth a spin of the wheel.

Best to you all.

“Buy Stocks, My Plebs!”

I ran into CH (that’s what I call her, “CH” — we’re buds) at the perfume counter at Bergdorf’s and she said “fugheddaboud the gold and the silver stocks for now, Jake, go out and get you some high beta stocks. Now, ged OUD dah heah!”

That vocal coach has done wonders with her Joisey accent, no?

CREE, VECO, SQM, POWR, TIE and, most of all, ENTR are all on my radar screen for tomorrow.

Slainte.

I’ve been mooning on about precious metals to make your head loll in zombie-dead fashion, haven’t I?  I’ll shut up for another day (yesterday I talked about banks, remember?) and discuss some other picks dear to my heart instead.

First, let me point out that today was a tight fisted, play-the-Obama-speech, earl (sic) and gas flinging session for the majority of The PPT members inside that eldritch sanctum today.   Many a new position was opened in the nat gas and earl sectors, though your humble servant reserved his coinage only for a small addition to [[ERX]] and a new starter position in Fly’s latest find, the barrier island building [[GLDD]].

But my fellow iBankers have already mentioned multiple carboniferous energy plays for your enrichment, so I will hold off and present instead two metal names in my portfolio that I think are worth a glance at this (critical?) juncture.

The first is [[TCK]] or Teck Cominco, which, like the Nine Travelers at Lothlorien, stands at the “edge of the knife.”    The weekly chart is self explanatory (and the daily is quite useless, btw) — price must hold at these levels or the stock will see $25 very quickly.

That said, I like this name, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, I think this name rebounds to the $45 level with the rest of the XME-like names, if this rebound scenarios continues.  Wait and see, first, however.

Another of my favourite non-precious portfolio metals is [[TIE]] which has been looking almost unnaturally healthy these days.    Given the consolidation in specialty metals, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this company taken out at some point in the next twelve months, and that could be what investors are seeing too.  First, the weekly is looking like it wants to break to free air:

Looks good enough to grab right now, but I think the daily gives some very nice direction regarding a proper buy point:

Let’s keep an eye on the gold and silver here as well.  Looking for Gold to stay above $1,200, here.  If it does not, I will have additional commentary on my follow up moves.

Best to you all.

Fruit Of Carpathia

Bring your sack, the LED leaders are marching forward with their grapes of wrath unfurled, and you want to be in that number, lest you take the hard edge of me terrible swift sword.

Hmmmm…. I think I feel an anthem coming on… bum-bum-bummmmmm…. nah, it’s passed.

I don’t mean to boast idly, but I was up 4.2% today and not, as you might believe, due to my precious metal portfolio alone. Make no mistake, those names were up nicely today, with Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]] ,Rubicon Minerals Corp. (USA) [[RBY]] , NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) [[NG]] , [[BAA]] , Exeter Resource Corp. [[XRA]] and my baby Silver Wheaton Corp. (USA) [[SLW]] leading my dogpack of precious metallicas like a dogsledder seeking Siberia from Alaska.

Others in my port, however, were up just as — or even more — handsomely, with the “3 T’s” racking in large horde — Thompson Creek Metals Company, Inc. [[TC]] , Teck Cominco Limited (USA) [[TCK]] and benighted Titanium Metals Corporation [[TIE]] rocking worldviews, and even Sud Ameriquan lithium developer Sociedad Quimica y Minera (ADR) [[SQM]] rebounded well today. Crazy Central European Distribution [[CEDC]] has finally woken back up, and Trannie King United Parcel Service, Inc. [[UPS]] looks to be leading the rebound with the Transports.

Nothing seems to lead these markets like the LED stocks, however, and I won’t rest until M. Le Docteur de le Fly is invested in the two leaders Cree, Inc. [[CREE]] and Veeco Instruments Inc. [[VECO]] , who have become the spokesmodels for Woody’s “relative strength” in this post-apocalyptic age.

First, note the Cree, Inc. [[CREE]] weekly, and slap yourself in the head for missing this opportunity:

I’d like to see that weekly volume bar increase as the week goes on, and I believe it will, especially when taking on the daily view:

The 20-day had held support for a while, so a launch back above it should be encouraging.  I  (luckily) added 2k more of both CREE and VECO last week as I had “low-ball” (heh, right) buy orders laid in that took advantage of the downdraft.   These two are a large part of my gain advantage today, and I think they will continue to lead.

For all the relative strength shown in Cree, Inc. [[CREE]] , check it out in Veeco Instruments Inc. [[VECO]] below… surely this is one of the strongest stocks in the universe right now, no?   Lay in wait, but do pounce as I have:

Stay on your toes, and be nimble, but I don’t think this liquidity wash is over  just yet.   Stay safer by grabbing tech leaders like the LED-ers, and hard money targets.  Everything else is suspect, and should be eschewed indeud.

Best to you all.

Behold! C’est le Roi du Soleil

Sun, Sun, Sun, Here He Comes…

Today was golden, metaphorically and physically.  Aye, my purse weighs heavy tonight, good sir. They’ll be more to come, but let’s see what today’s action meant for one of favourite picks.  Today, I examine the daily Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]] chart for some near term lessons and targets:

anvdaily1

What a difference a day makes, no?  One successful thrust and we are up and out of the consolidation zone once again, and ready to make a run at the early January highs ($16.50 area).   We may get a couple of pullbacks from here, but I think we will proceed to that stated goal relatively quickly before pausing to coil again.

Our friend Baby [[HUI]] is also showing signs of robust life, not two weeks after becoming as oversold as that index had been back in the dark days of November ’08.

hui_daily

Note how the MACD and the slow stochastic are only just turning up on this weekly chart?  It makes one want to touch one’s staggeringly huge bouffant, doesn’t it?

There’s a lot of run left in this move, I think.   Maybe we’ll even shoot past the recent highs of $520 in this cycle.   With the dollar continuing to flag, and the price of gold holding about $1,120 — I have all the confidence in the world.

Back in the here and now, I continue to like all the precious plays I named in yesterday’s post, and I also like the “N” team, NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) [[NG]] , New Gold Inc. (USA) [[NGD]] and Northgate Minerals Corporation (USA) [[NXG]] .   My top picks continue to be in silver, and especially Silver Wheaton Corp. (USA) [[SLW]] and [[EXK]] .

I also like the action in my two tech favourites (sic) today, Cree, Inc. [[CREE]] and Veeco Instruments Inc. [[VECO]] .   I actually attended a venture capital presentation this afternoon on nanotechnology that blew my socks off.   This new company’s first major customer was Veeco.   I think that may be a sign, I dunno.

On the “other metals” area — the three T’s will be strong with steel ripping.   Don’t forget Thompson Creek Metals Company, Inc. [[TC]] , Teck Cominco Limited (USA) [[TCK]] , and Titanium Metals Corporation [[TIE]] , as well as RTI International Metals, Inc. [[RTI]] , which has moved nicely in the last year or so.

Finally, I would be remiss if I left off my two platinum blondes [[PAL]] and [[PTM]] .   Buy these and get a year’s subscription to Lady GaGa Magazine.   It won’t disappoint.

Your faithful servant in the Reign of the Sun King,

Jake.

A Song for the Times?
___________________________________

Well, so much for Helicopter Ben’s New York Times- abetted “tightening” kabuki theater act.

Did you enjoy it?  I hear he’s been studying at the New School.

I dunno, maybe the guys down at Goldman called Bernanke up last night and asked him for some help in getting out of their Euro shorts, since DXY (sorry, no quote yet — see? [[DXY]] ) had run up to about $80.30 today by lunch time, only to tuck tail and (Black?) swan dive right back down to $80 flat just in time for Benjamin’s Jawboning routine at 2:15 pm.

That particular bit of mummery and prestidigitation must’ve in turn convinced at least one or two bag-holding kaftan merchants from Milwaukee to buy dollars again, because the dollar index got all the way to $80.10 by late afternoon, giving us all that familiar “blah” feeling at the close.

All pretense seems to have dropped away after the stock mavens went home, however, and the dollar is now (as of 12:36 am Eastern) trading back down to yesterday’s low’s at about $79.74, looking at a “next stop” of about $79.50, and then $79 even.     Party on, Garth (and Darth… Vadon, that is).

These incipient moves should be enough to get our rally on in the gold and silver sector, not to mention our other hard currency equivalents including earl, natural gas, and the specialty metals.   I was extremely busy today and I apologize, but my punishment was not being able to add much to the portfolio, although I would’ve loved to finish my Allied Nevada Gold Corp. [[ANV]] accumulation today.   I am quite sure it will be more dear tomorrow.

I was able to add 60 more June $40 [[GDX]] calls at $5.80.   They were a standing order, and I think I may have been able to get them even cheaper, but beggars, chooser, etc. etc.   I now have total 120 of those $40 June strike calls, and I think I’m done there.

The rest of my exposure will remain in liquid equities, and I hope to add to positions tomorrow in the usual suspects, and perhaps some NovaGold Resources Inc. (USA) [[NG]] , New Gold Inc. (USA) [[NGD]] and Northgate Minerals Corporation (USA) [[NXG]] .   I also like Exeter Resource Corp. [[XRA]] ‘s relative strength as of late.

For silver I may dip my toe in the Chanci selection — [[SVM]] , as I’ve admired their price action recently.  I may also look to grab some additional [[PAAS]] .   If [[CDE]] stalls in the early trade, I may also add to that one.

Platinum is reviving tonight along with its brethren, so don’t forget about [[PTM]] and [[PAL]] .

On the non-precious side, I may grab some [[ERX]] for a ride similar to that of [[AGQ]] .   I also continue to like Petroleo Brasileiro SA (ADR) [[PBR]] and Occidental Petroleum Corporation [[OXY]] .    I also happen to think SandRidge Energy Inc. [[SD]] is undervalued here, and it is a perennial favourite (sic) of The PPT .

Last, don’t forget Thompson Creek Metals Company, Inc. [[TC]] , Teck Cominco Limited (USA) [[TCK]] and Titanium Metals Corporation [[TIE]] in the specialty metal names, and Sociedad Quimica y Minera (ADR) [[SQM]] , as their lithium is a bargain here as well.    I expect tomorrow will be a good day for we merry shipmates of the U.S.S Jackson.

All aboard!
