Sorry Florida fans, we’ve got your “Urban Meyer Magic” right here in the Lou, and he’s not going anywhere.
(At least not this year)
No, seriously, though… do you think it’s a coincidence that The University of Florida, with the best recruiting classes over the last ten plus years, bar none, sucked balls this year without Defensive Coordinator Charlie Strong?
And do you believe it a coincidence that Florida head coach Urban Meyer has decided to resign again this year, and flee back to the bosom of his family and “good health?” C’mon.
I happen to think it’s no coincidence, especially as Charlie Strong has managed to not only make the Cards bowl eligible in his first year as head coach (after 27 years as an assistant at various racist SEC-Conference schools), but also to win their first bowl since winning the 2007 Orange Bowl four years ago (with former, now Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino), 31-28 over Southern Mississippi.
Okay, so it was the Beef O’ Brannigans Beer & Cheesenutz and Light Draft Bowl, but you have to start somewhere right? And that “Florida Magic” — which really stemmed from Charlie’s ability to recruit fine young men from Florida –has already begun to bear fruit. Note this week’s news — as Louisville has landed it’s first five star recruit, Teddy Bridgewater of Northern Miami, since hometown boy RB Michael Bush (now with the Raiders), signed seven years ago. Here’s the skinny:
Miami Northwestern quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, a five-star recruit who is widely considered to be one of the best dual threat quarterback prospects in the county, announced his commitment to coach Charlie Strong and the Louisville Cardinals earlier today. Bridgewater, a one-time Miami commit who reopened his options after Shannon’s termination, made it clear that the chance to get on the field early was the biggest factor in his decision.
That’s right, they stole this guy from “The U” — Miami University — his own hometown school. Now that’s strong… that’s Charlie Strong. Looking forward to watching my Cards continue to kick ass until the SEC steals Charlie back, swallowing crow on their 27 year mistake. I fear will ultimately be our porridge, and am resigned to it.
_________________________
Speaking of “resigned to our porridge,” I am ultimately resigned to a pullback here, and have begun hedging my large PM positions with sold “in the money” calls on my largest pieces.
I sold 80 $34 strike February calls for SLW today, for example. I also have written call orders in for EXK, ANV, IAG and several others that have yet to fill. I also sold 10k shares of GSS today at $4.79, which was 45% of my position.
I plan to keep on with these moves as we go to year end. I am writing calls because I’ve already taken egregious gains this year, and would like to defer any additional taxable gains into next year. Also, I would like to maintain my “core position” in many PM positions despite my inclinations toward lower prices in the near term. Silver, however is looking like it will pull back in dreadful fashion. Be apprised.
One other thing, I must take the opportunity to brag on my “rare earth metals” position in AVARF, which I will likely trim by 30 to 50% tomorrow. After holding for about a month, that sucker took off today with a newly announced AMEX listing. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.
Best to you all, my gente.

Why do you see the PMs trading down? The dollar has been strong(er) recently yet the PMs are holding up reasonably well? Whats the catalyst that is gonna send them down? Dollar strength? Crowded trade? Profit-taking? Thanks.
P.S. Nice call on AVARF, I have been riding that one as well (ironically bought it a few days before you highlighted it here). MCP has been a real Rare Earth champ though. Kicking myself for missing that pony.
Yeah, I didn’t have MCP either. Silver’s extremely stretched in this cycle, and it needs to consolidate. Gold is also overdo for a pullback to shake some of these new baby bulls of its back. No big deal, we just haven’t seen a decent scare since August.

$29 to $25 in mid-Nov was scary to me.
But owing to your track-record, I will hold off on buying more silver for a while, but I am not selling anything.
There are accelerating structural shifts (primarily fiat getting scarier to more and more people).
Do you think Max Keiser’s push for people to buy physical silver is having an effect on price? Or would you deem it negligible?
I don’t think you are going to have a grass roots retail effect, no. The commericial and industrial buyside are just exponentially bigger.
_________
My girlfriend loves me for my “Oscar Meyer Magic”.
You make a nice bologna samich, do you?
_______
Drives a goofy looking vehicle.
line in the sand for silver is 29,and it seems to hold nicely.hey jake, real ballsy writing calls @ 34 on slw.
Not so ballsy… that may not be low enough.
__________
Good Game….Louis-Ville did get a gift on the fumble oh well that’s racin—-Jake have a great Christmas and New Years….look forward to your predictions.
Is it just me or should Lou Holtz be kicked down an elevator shaft?
Omigod, he’s a complete embarassment to broadcasting. I think his speech impediment has gotten worse in recent years.
And Mark May is nearly unbearable… geez, between him and Dierdorf, is it something about blowhard former offensive linemen? Whatta jerk that guy is…
___________
It goes along with I have been saying but you have to add the name Dan Mullens as another reason why Meyer was a success. Mullen was the QB coach at Utah (think Alex Smith) with Meyer and offensive coordinator with the the Gators until he left a couple of years ago to join Mississippi State as head coach.
Meyer surrounded himself with top notch assistants like Strong and Mullens (add one great athlete named Tebow) and when they left Meyer did not look so good and very confused as a head coach.
By the way, can’t really call Mississippi State racist as they hired Coach Croom back in ’04.
I personally find it hard to believe that Strong was never hired because of racism (wife is white), but can’t imagine why he didn’t go somewhere else earlier.
Tha SEC …. is…. racis’!
(Sorry, inside joke… )
_______________
The word on him was “he didn’t interview well.” What that’s code for (how well did Quacky Holtz interview??) I’m not certain.
____________
Jack,
Just wanted to say thanks for the awsome EXK pick, followed you in when you posted (http://ibankcoin.com/jakegint/2010/11/16/exk-add-zone/) on the 16th of November. Great call and thanks for sharing your insight!
P
Glad to be of some help.
_____
Jake,
I love your blog and read it voraciously…but I need clarity here….Le Fly believes EXK will go higher…you “seem” to say otherwise…which guru do I believe…? Which leads me to my next questions….
1. What are your thoughts on Palladium, specifically PAL? 2. Thoughts on a gold company called YNGFF?
Keep up the good work…you rock!
That can only be decided by a conclusive leg-wresling match between the two coin-banking juggernauts.
On all matters related to precious metals, defer to Mr. Gint. The Fly is a relative neophyte in this area (though he too seems to be getting defensive of late, which suggests that he is more prescient than he lets on).
RE: Palladium, Mr. Gint will have his own thoughts. I will offer that there’s a lot of breathless hype on the internet about impending Palladium short squeezes. These tend to be peddled by the same people peddling the JP Morgan-silver-short-implosion theory. Both of these urban legends have been around in goldbug circles for over ten years, but newcomers get all aroused by what they think this is “inside information”. (Hint: nothing you read on the internet is ever “inside information”)
There probably will be a Palladium spike someday, just as with cotton, etc. But don’t bank on it happening overnight. That said, it’s probably a good diversifier in the PM complex.
I personally like SWC over PAL, though — it gives you exposure to platinum as well — but I wouldn’t buy either of them until late January.
Mr. Goldbug is doppleganging me today.
“What he said.”
_________
re: EXK the Jake vs the Fly divergence. Time hoorizon only.
For the short term only. Fly has a major position for a longer term a la FTK, the Jake is just trading short term but will be back in with both feet later.
Opinions expressed are strictly those of the poster, are speculative and may not reflect the thinking of the Jake or Le Fly in any way.
I am just reaping some profits as I expect a pullback in the 10-15% range. Remember, I’ve been in this one since the 3’s.
I still have 60% of my original position, although I am trying to hedge that with some sold calls as well. Didn’t have much luck today.
______________
Hope you can find it in your heart to root for other birds this bowl season… Mainly the Ducks on Jan 9th….
‘Course I’m going to root for the Ducks, as I always take the underdog if there’s no clear partisan interest on my side.
Besides, this Newton thing stinks to high heaven. I don’t agree with this bogus “amateur status” these guys all have to keep as collegians, but thems IS the rules right now, and you telling me he’s “clear” because he didn’t know his dad was whoring him out to a bunch of different schools?
C’mon, already.
_________
I’m sure he knew. It’s like the movie Blue Chips, where the Indiana kid wants a new tractor for his dad and 50k in a duffel bag. The funnier thing to me was that Newton left Florida before he had to go in front of the academic ethics committee for cheating.
And stealing a laptop, apparently.
_____
As a representative of the University of Arkansas fan base I must bestow much thanks to Louisville for playing a role in getting Bobby Petrino to Fayetteville. Louisville and Michael Vick’s dogs will always have a special place in our hearts.
I can’t believe that scumbag has stayed around as long as he has already in Fayetteville. Who’s got the compromising pictures?
Or did they give him Wal-Mart or something?
______
Why would he leave? He’s one of the top 10 highest paid coaches in the country. Gets to coach in the premier league and has access to its recruiting grounds. Also has access to the prime recruiting territory in Texas.
Has no competition from anything else in-state save for a few county fairs; thus 100% dedicated die-hard fan base. Access to some of the best facilities in the country, etc. etc. etc.
Oh and he just re-upped for something like 7 years. Buyout clause would require him to ante up ridiculous cashish (think it was $15+ million) to jump ship.
When he signed on I thought he would stay a long time to at least get over the perception he was a job-jumpin’ mofo. Thus my Christmas wish for this year is that the NFL makes enough rumblings about a lockout that Mallett comes back for his senior year. Bring him back, we get our #1 RB and #1 WR back and it could be teh awesome next season.
The reason BP is still there is that no one trusts him enough to give him the job. You can tell he is lying when his lips move. I wouldnt be surprised if his exit was announced during halftime of the BCS game.
Speaking of character and hard work;
CCS is the best coach, teacher and motivator I have seen here in Louisville for some time. I wake up every morning and get inspired just by thinking about the man. GO CARDS. Bridgewater will be the first of many recruits coming to learn how to be a champion for Strong.
Ahhhh, another person who has been brainwashed by the ESPiN propaganda machine. Regarding his new SEVEN year extension:
“The contract also includes an $18 million mutual buyout clause in 2011-12 should the university fire Petrino or he leave the school. The buyout is lowered by $25,000 in 2013 and falls to $14.5 million in 2014 and $10.8 million in 2015. It’s $7.4 million in 2016 and $3.9 million in the final year of the deal.”
Petrino ain’t going anywhere. Also do you honestly think Florida wouldn’t have taken him over Muschamp? Pssshaw.
I hope not for Florida’s sake. I have followed Petrinos career since he told me he loved Louisville then bailed for the NFL (cant blame the man) then left a note in a locker telling his team in Atlanta good luck.
Check the private airport log in Fayetteville, his name will be all over it
For sure his name is all over the private airport log, he’s got recruitin’ to do. Dude gave the NFL a try and discovered it wasn’t his cup of tea to put it mildly. An opportunity came along to coach in the best fuggin’ league in the country and he took it. Arkansas needed a coach quickly because of the shit heap condition Houston Nutt left it in. We couldn’t wait until the end of the NFL season.
Petrino caught all the shit for bailing out in the middle of the season but why didn’t Arthur Blank get rolled up for canning Dan Reeves in the middle of a season? Oh that’s right, because he is one of ESPiN’s biggest sponsors.
Keep believin’ the hype as Louisville retains its position as a feeder school for the SEC.
Webster-Chan just committed for 2012, i think Lexington finally lit a fire under Pitino…
Everyone is making a big deal over this guy… he’s not even top 100. The only other schools that had offered him a ride were Cincy and WVa.
Let’s see him get this Coleman kid (6’9″ 280 junior in HS) and then we can pound some chest.
__________
Did you see Deing smash that dunk tonight? Im just saying Pitino seems to be recruiting harder and better then any time i can remember, and I think the credit goes to cal… Its a good old Italian mob war now
So true. For years no one mentioned Florida’s defense. It was always Jesus H. Tebow and “The Urb” who made the headlines.
Anyone with two eyes and a brain could realize that the defense was the reason Florida was a perennial title contender.
Give me good defense over offense any day of the week. On a related note, Auburn is excellent against the run…what happens if Oregon can’t run (their bread and butter)? 38-10 Auburn? Have you seen the “spiral” that Derron Thomas throws?
Oregon is pretty stout against the run as well and their pass D is much better than Auburns’.
Please see Darron Thomas’ games against Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington. UO runs 56% vs 44% pass, so they are much more balanced than most would think
I agree with you pistil. The defensive display Florida put on Ohio State in the championship game was unbeevable. Ohio State runs back the opening kick for a TD and it was lights out after that. Troy Smith probably still has bruises from that game.
That game was a primo example of SEC v. Big Ten.
In other words, “no contest,” speedwise.
OSU had Ted Ginn, Florida had 11 Ted Ginns on defense
________
Until Ted Ginn was injured in the celebration after the first TD and out for rest of game…
Merry Christmas Jake!
I heard that Americans with Samoan ancestry are over 40 times more likely to be in the NFL. Sweet phenotype advantage!
Merry Christmas Jake.
Thanks for all you hard work and sharing it with us.
Bob
Merry Christmas Jake, and a healthy & prosperous New Year.
Jake, A Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks to everyone… if I get a minute ovah heah, I may put up a special Christmas Memory post tonight.. Depends on how much “some assembly required” I’ve got in front of me…
Merry Christmas to all and the peace of the Season as well.
