I grew up in Miami and attended as a kid the Jackie Gleason Open at the Inverarry golf course in the early 1970s. His variety shows originated from the Miami Beach Convention Center in the South Beach area. Back then the whole area was a crap hole with drug addicts, drunks, porno shops, and poor senior citizens.
